You must have done something right in those last 10 minutes!
Just FYI, from what i learned the key is line of sight. As long as the prisoner can see you then you're fine. This means avoiding trees and rocks, and when walking up/down steep slopes take it at an angle. And use the follow command from the radial menu, the trick with that is to be 10+m away when you use it. If you can use the "follow me" command and are 10m away, then you know the prisoner has you in his sights and should start walking immediately. If you get the error message, DON'T move closer, just move around till it works. Patience is key. Last tip, I know some have had problems with this, but it made my 5 escort missions smooth as butter. DON'T accept waypoints that are 1500m away. Delete them, and ask Whip for another. Sometimes I had to ask 30 times to get one below 1km, but I always got one. That lack of distance will not only make your slow walk shorter, but you'll also avoid so much of the wildlife that you can walk in a straight line and avoid incapping. Good luck.

The problem I had was the person I was escorting would get stuck in small mountains. There was no way I could find to get them out, not even using /unstick or /eject. Just keep going back or wait for a fix. Sorry to be of no help.
Good luck.
