I like to grind on Tortons, Picketts, and now you can add Fammba's. They dont have deadly poisons, or disease to deal with... they are plentiful, and they have big lairs. Be careful though, make sure you always always always take a friend that canthrow stim c or higher.

I'm a Master Pistoller / Master Smuggler and I did the entire grind on Savage Quenkers on Dant. They give good xp, they don't DB and the lairs are pretty uniform. (Unlike Huurtons XXXwhere you get pups and regular huurtons). You will own them by charging (so they don't spit acid) using Pistol Melee 1 KD, bleeding them by stacking health shot 1 and 2 and spamming health Shot 2.
I'm at the point in the Padawan grind where I can take on lairs and 3 hit kill them.

My method is easy. Pistol, LLC, Combat XP - First run. Pistol, Carbine, Combat XP - second run. Occasional Nade use, pistol, combat XP, dabble carbine or LLC. I have found that I occasionally cap out all 4, but most times Iconcentrate oncappingcombat xp and in the process I cap two weapons. Lairs and monster are gurks, rancors, nitches, squill cave, quenkers. Sometime I may go after POI battle zones, or chase krayt and kimos in a group. The best way to get a lot of this done is have a close friend(s) or guildmates who are docs and TKM. They buff, tank and heal while I range back and spam the spawn silly hitting the TAB key. The expense is off the hook with armor if you get in too close, particularly with Krayt Dragons. Other than that I play casually and still manage to fill 210 to 300K in FS XP every two days. I choose to have fun, otherwise you can burnout on the grind. Just remember XP happens, no matter where you find it.

I realize that this isn't answering the original poster's question, but I find it interesting enough to share my bizarre template.
I'm grinding as an MBH+Creature Handler (Currently migrating to CH from Squad Leader). It's, um, interesting. I don't really play enough anyway to make the grenade grinding worthwhile, and this way has some good benefits. If I were purely setting up to grind, my template would probably look like this: MBH, Medic 0-0-0-2, CH 0-0-2-4 (or another tree, if you prefer. I just want to train mounts), Novice SL.
Here's the logic: MBH caps combat XP lower, around 170k, I believe. However, although it's slower, we do have our BH XP, which caps at at least 36k (not sure, never capped it). You also have three weapon trees which cap at 900k. Good pistol and carbine specials, and a speed sliced LLC is great when your buffed and don't have to worry about taking damage. Medic is pretty obvious, the Organic Chem II is just there so you don't have to buy Stim Bs. Creature Handler gives you some extra tank help which you'll need with a full ranged template, and CH exp. CH exp is incredibly easy to get, has a decent trade-in rate for the tree it's use for, and if you use the method of just tagging the target right before it dies, you'll get full CH exp and practically the full amount of combat, SL and weapon XP as well. Which brings me to Squad Leader. Now I know that SL exp trades in at 90 to 1. But, since you're already picking up Combat XP, having SL is just free bonus XP, which you maximize through CH. Creature Management III gives you the ability to call a second pet. Just having Novice CH allows you the ability to have out a pet, a droid, and a faction pet simultaneously. This is where the SL exp comes in.
In a solo group with you and your pets, you get SL xp of two times number of pets times combat XP, or (NumPets*2)*CombatXP. So if you've got two creatures, a droid, and a faction pet, you'll be getting 8x your combat XP in SL. Again, it's not a big number because of the trade-in, but it's effectively free. Plus, you've got three trees of Scout, so you'll be able to pick up plenty of Scout XP for trade-in as well.
I'm sure my way isn't as brutally efficient as grenade grinding, but for me, anyway, it's more fun. Plus, for serious power-players who finish their tree then want to bank as much XP as possible before the next unlock, this might be the perfect template.

I never did any grenades. I was a Master Swordsman/Master Rifleman did about 3 branches with that then finished off as Master Swordsman/Master Pikeman.
Master Swordsman/Master Rifleman is nice for grinding FS XP and is a pretty good Loot hunting template.
When you don't feel like capping you can always Hunt NS or Krayts to get crystals and pearls you will need later on. You still earn XP for your kills so your still progressing :0)

Yes, I kill all NS and SMC I see, plus at the poi's. about 5k a kill, good loot to generate money (it's sporadic though at times, can go 2 buff sessions or so without anything worth a credit, but then you turn around and find a +11 tape or attachment).

get together with a few friends and hit the biggest caves you can (Rancor cave, NS forced labor camp, etc...). Whichever cave you can empty quickly and move on to something else then come back and do the cave again. Be warned, the squill cave is usually full of idiots, and you probably will not get a very effective grind (i've had my squills "taunted" from me a many a time, it sucks).
