The way we completed the mission for a friend was to pull mel away from other npcs. Then i used dominate mind on him to agro him. The friend with the mission made sure to hit mel thenwent off alittle ways logged out then logged right back in. Once my friend logged out mel couldnt heal. When the mission holderlogged back in we killed mel and completed the mission, We didnt have to do anything with the bugged crystals.

I helped with 2 different mission we did it this way both times with no problems.

using the person who has the mission to destroy crystals isn't a for sure to not have them bugged...

I did this and mine were bugged but we beat mel with a little trickery on part of me and my Jedi partners
