Thread: Fencer Website
It appears that there are currently no real Fencer websites that we can use to collect useful information, and hold relavant discussions outside of this SoE provided one, which we cannot edit, nor control sticky-posts and such. I've given this alot of thought and have decided to build us one that we have more control over.
Since this site is for all of us, I want to hear your submissions on the name for our site. One fencer on my server suggested the obvious "Touche!", and another suggested a more tongue-in-cheek "Foiled Again!" Perhaps you would rather see something else. I'll collect suggestions until this Friday, then hold a vote for the top 5 or so.
Please also feel free to suggest any specific forum topics you feel would be useful, and whether or not you feel qualifiedto be one of the site moderators (you might include why). One forum for certain will be our summarized collection of Fencer issues to be presented to Devs on this board (once we have a functioning corespondant). Thanks for the information in advance. It's my intention that this evolve into our primary "one-stop-shopping" source of information and discussion.

There was someone else trying to come up with a website awhile back for the profession but I haven't heard from them since.
As far as a name is concerned...anything that's easy to look up would be great, I run an email network of Fencers on Eclipse and I'd love to have a site to refer them to to relay information.
As far as site content, I love to see sections on:
"Mob" types and their vulnerablilities andhunting gounds with levels of the mob included.
Locations of all Fencing trainers.
A place we can upload Melee vender waypoints, listed per server.
Maybe even a registration section that shows which "Fencers" belong to what server, so we can bum training from one another ![]()
Weapons along with their damage bonus' and even pictures
Any quests that can yield a 1h weapon...I only know of one at the moment
A newbie guide that explains macros, armor types, combo macro styles, stat migration, stat details, etc. (probably need our missing correspondent to comment on the latter).
That's all I can think of at the moment, thanks!
I appreciate your responce. I have already included most of the topics (in some form or another) that you have requested on my list of potential forums and databases. Lists of PC Fencer Masters and NPC Fencer Trainers per server, details and explainations of all skills, certs, etc; Fencer equipment; guides and tactics; ...and so forth. I agree with you that these are likely tobethe threadsutilized the most. I hadn't thought of including mob stats since they seem to vary so much, but it can certainly be investigated. I don't know of any Fecner-related quests outside of Jabba's to get our "top" sword, but who knows what may result from our latest request for more sword options.
I also intend to include links to other useful sites (including here). A forum for reviewing and discussing the latest upgrades/nerfs/patches. Tracking top Fencer issues and a wish-list. I'm going to post the whole Fencer tree with the related exp and skill points to gain them, the titles each level opens, and the bonuses granted by each. I know this is available other places, but we should also have it readily available on our site.
Is there really so little interest in having our own website? Or do you guys just not have any input as to its structure and content?
I really don't mind investing the time, effort, and money necessary to put it together. The site's maintenance and administrative activities can be placed into the same time-slot I use to maintain a few of the other's. Not a big deal. However, if there is no interest in breaking free of the restrictions we have on what is posted here, and how it's organized and such, then there would be no real reason toinvest theextra time or resources.
If nothing else give a bump if there is interest in us having our own site, even if you don't have any input atm regarding how it's put together. If you do want a say in how it's constructed, I'm still interested in your ideas for our site. I'll need submissions for functionality concepts such as types of discussion forums, info we want tracked indatabases and tables, important links you want included, etc. I also need asthetic ideas such as a site name, desired fonts, themes, and color scemes. After it's begun, just about anythign can be easily changed outside of the site name; so I'd really like some ideas on that so I can get it off the ground.
Thrust if you love Fencers!

PS: Would a Trandoshan Fencer be a Lunge Lizard?
As far as content, one thing that I think that I would like would be a database where everybody could submit their sword, and the damage that their sword does. I think this would be a great resource for people who wanted to know the stats of various different swords.
We could have something like the "Who's got the best sword" thread, except on a database and on a page. It would be easier to access and more people would visit it.
As for the title of the site, well, I'm not a good title-maker-upper person so I can't imagine what I would call it.
If you are making the site, good luck!!!
I really like the name "Foiled Again."
I also think the players current swords database would be really neat to see. Also all of the above ideas are great.
I think if you got the site started first with just anything, there will be more feedback and suggestions.
As for forums, I think they would always take a backseat to these current ones. But they would have there advantages.
Just my two cents.
Er, heh...yeah, sorry, I'll get working on some ideas. Been a little busy myself and your topic looked like it required actual work and thought. >_<

I think it would be great. You could have forums about experience gaining strategies and guides, PvP strats, sword stats, humorous tales, interesting places, skill combos, etc...
Also a good place to put info that is presently scattered all over such as trainer locations, good weaponsmiths for the various galaxies, PA's seeking good swordsmen and that kind of thing..

And the flesh'd soldier, rough and hard of heart,
In liberty of bloody hand shall range,
With conscience wide as hell...."

Raphayl,
Ihave a lot of experience writing web based applications using PHP with database support.
Let me know what your web server setup is going to be - I'd be more than happy to offer some free programming ![]()
FYI - My ideal environment would be a Linux server running Apache with PHP and database support. For the database, PostgreSQL is my choice (but MySQL is okay in a pinch- just not if the server load gets high). PHPlib would also be very helpfull. It's all open source - but I know not everyone has peeled themselves from the microsoft web just yet ![]()
Do you have forum software picked out yet?PHP BB (http://www.phpbb.com/) is my favorite - and it's free ![]()
Some of the things people are requesting - like logins with the ability to upload character and item data, are not that hard to do given the right server environment. I'd also be interested in coding an app for people to upload combat logs and have it spit back some statistical data (graphs and such).
I'm not sure how much control you have over the actual server, so some of the things I've mentioned might not be feasible. Anyway, let me know if you want any assistance.
