Thread: challenge: name one new topic that doesn't fall under Raphayl's posting taboo
if everyone quit posting things of this nature on the fencer board (or any other profession board for that matter) the entire forums would be totally empty.
I mean--it'sso awful that we have to deal withsuch anoverwhelming tirade of posts on the fencerboard!
/sarcasm off
a post like this may go over a little better on a forum like the jedi or CH boards, but honestly we're struggling to beat out the chefs and Image Designers. Lets be thankful for the little bit of activity we actually get on this forum.
"...if everyone quit posting things of this nature on the fencer board (or any other profession board for that matter) the entire forums would be totally empty."
I think you may have gotten the wrong idea. I did not suggest that "everyone quit posting things of this nature", I simply suggested that we might not need 15 separate threads asking the exact same question and getting the exact same answer. If the topic is worth discussing, that's great! Let's post about it, and discuss it. But can't we all discuss it in the same thread? If the discussion is going on simultaneously in a dozen different threads, each thread is only getting a portion of the information unless everyone is duplicating their posts in every thread. If that's the case... then what was the point of having all those different threads? I realize there is a bit of an "ego" thing associated with starting you vewy ownest new fwed, but soon that novelty should wear off and we can maturely settle for making use of a identical thread that was already in existance.
Those of you new to this forum just don't know me very well yet. I'm not a raving tyrant charging around trying to spoil anyone's fun and getting paid for it or something. I was elected into this completely un-compensated office by my Fencing peers... I did not ask for it. However, upon being placed into office, I have promised to do everything I can to try and improve this profession for the Fencers that placed their faith in me to resprent their needs. I can do that much better if all the new topics (not necessarily new threads... but genuinely new topics) are easier to locate. To do my job correctly I need to read every single last post in every single last thread. Man that gets monotenous when they are all duplicates.
One person that originally did not see my logic in making this request made the statement that they didn't want to have to browse through 8,000 threads to find what they were looking for. Why do you suppose there are 8,000 threads to have to wade through? There certainly have not been 8,000 new topics, so the vast majority are complete duplicates. If we made even a moderate effort to try and keep the same topic in the same thread or small group of threads, there just wouldn't be all that much to wade through. Those things people are looking for would be on the first page or two, with anything really new in the first couple threads.
Personally, I don't think board activity would decrease simply because we tried to be a bit more efficient. I would think that people could get the information they wanted faster... and then move on to the point where we can discuss current topics essential to the progress of the profession. I realise many (surely not all)of the Holocron Fencers are just passing through and couldn't care less about the long-term survival of the Fencer profession since they plan to drop it as soon as they have gotten what they wanted from it, but those of us that are here because we truely intend to be a Fencer feel our long-term golas are pretty improtant.
Take this thread for example. Could you not find one of the other 100 or so "bash the correspondent" threads to post this in? It would have accomplished just as much for the Fencer Profession as it did by posting it here.
All I'm asking, it that if someone is new to our forum, and doesn't know me or what I'm all about... just give me a chance and see for yourself what my goals are. See if I'm not trying very hard to make YOUR game experience better before you jump on the "I'm unhappy/bored/whatever, so let's attack our only link to getting our needs across the to Devs!" bandwagon. Your choice of course. You can continue to wastetime and board space flaming if that makes you happy, or you can perhaps do you part in trying to get our profession straightened out. I'd certainly welcome your assistance.
i am not correspondent bashing and resent the implication that i am doing so. I am also not going to be accused of correspondent boot-licking--Which I'm sorry to say several of you are quite guilty of. It's the responsibility of the correspondent to represent the fencer community. If someone can't handle a little criticism--this may not be the ideal position for them.
I believe raph is doing an exellent job as a correspondent and that any of the other professions would be lucky to have him.
HOWEVER,
someone new to the boards will see this message as an indication that we as the fencer community do not care about his SPECIFIC (however trite or mundane) concerns. Then, when he does have a pertinent, discussion-worthy topic to post about--We will be left out of the loop because he views us as the forum snobs.
In conclusion,
If promoting constructive information exchange means putting up with a little extra forum fluff--SO BE IT.
and by the way--no one has come up with a topic that didn't fall under his list.![]()
I'll give it a whirl!
How about: What foods are the best when...ummm...you are feigning death and umm....err.....your Rankor is just sitting their giggling at you and ....oh boy, ummm....you ran out of stim C's and ...and...and Oh yeah, and you are a fencer too? ![]()
I either won the challenge, or named off about 5 topics already covered! rofl
Seriously though, a lot of folks are missing the point of the post Raphayl made. Its not telling you to never again, from this time forward, ask questions or whatnot. It seems intended to keep fresh issues on the first page etc. For all shehaddone for the community, all the time invested andspent testing ideas instead ofplaying this game as the majority of us do, youshould know by now she is not out to go dancing on some power trip or control the forums as her own (as many folks have accused other correspondants on otherboards). For the time being, it is just a message for folks looking for answers to direct them to thenumber of informative threads that may already exist. In the end though, you are free to post more "What weapons arebest" "what does speed do" and such threads to your heart's content. :-)

That's something I definitely do not want. As you probably read, when I saw that the post was being taken this way I quickly un-sticked it. Sure, I do want people to at leastattempt to use the Search feature first, but I do not want to make them feel like I want all new posting to stop. I just see all the new Fencers coming in to the Forum, and already the new threads on old topics have quadrupled... I was just concerned about how bad it would finally get.
In the end I have temporairly re-stickied it to serve as a semi-FAQ post letting people know that posts with answers to these questions do already exist, and can be found with a little effort on their part... at least until I can get a true working FAQ up and working. I have already brought the subject of being able to maintain this kind of thread to the Devs/Admin, and there are several possibilities. I should be able to finish up my current project by this weekend, and we can begin the framework for the real FAQ.
