About to finish what I hope to be my last holo and am looking for a good Melee class to do. I want to do fencer but is it the best other than TKA to do for PvE?

fencer by itself sucks against the high end mobs, most of which are medium or heavily armored as mentioned above.

however, it compliments heavy swordsman, TKA, rifleman, pistoleer vewry very nicely any of which will make a great overall PvP as well as a nice PvP template.

Fencer is a great prof for PvE if your a group hunter or even a solo hunter vs certain things. If your looking for a prof that is highly defensive then this is the one for you, if you want a pound for pound heavy weight champion of the world then go for swordsman, besides at least they have cool looking weapons lol.

Seriously though i feel fencer is much as the rangers describe their proffession, you either feel it or you dont... your gonna love it or it won't stick to you and tickle your fancy. Personally i love not being able to be hit and taking some extra time to kill something, its nice to be finese oriented vs raw power.

What level of PvE?

If we are talking Missions from a Terminal. You'll have no worries...You won't do as much damage as the others but you also won't get hit as much, to the point where armour is optional

If you're talking the High End mobs. The new dungeons and some of the other NPC's with HAM bars to make an Ancient Krayt jealous then I'm afraid we can't say the same. At this level they never miss, your defenses are useless, your dodge won't work and, due to our poor AP weapon and alt damage being almost universally 100% resisted at this level, you won't do any damage either.

At the High level the Swordsmen is King of the Melee.

With any luck this will get addressed and although we will never be a Damage dealer we should get back to the point of having the defensive advantage and be in demand to Tank. Might have to wait for the Combat Rebalance for this, tho'

Well, I told you once, told you twice.
I told you before.
Just 'cause I'm the bad guy, don´t mean I'm gonna lose 'em all

Fencer has the best defenses of any class, hands down. This allows you to tank much better then others. For leveling up and normal hunting our Stun and Gad batons do very well, we may not kill as fast as others, but we do fine.

The problem comes when things have heavy armor and are not vulnerable to stun/kinetic. While we can tank them quite often, we can't really hurt them.

The biggest problem currently is game mechanics, top armor and buffs make defense almost pointless in all but the hardest places. Meaning you can take a heavy damage weapon like swordsman, and not care about defense, cause the hits you take don't matter. Hopefully the combat rebalance will fix this.

So if you decide to go Fencer, you are basically accepting that you wont hit as hard or for as much as others, your trading that for defense that is great, but sometimes doesn't matter (well it matters in PVP, but you asked PVE.) Not many people are readyto take this role.

I'm still not having the problems that folks say they are having with not dodging and defenses not working in any of the new dungeons - deathwatch, corvette, krayts, NS elders, acklay - I dodge, my defenses work, and I'm a powerful tank that keeps them off others so they can damage them. Don't know, but seems like our prof is working for me. I do have to say that turrets doing mind damage is really sucking lately, but that's cause I have a rifle equipped when I'm trying to take them out so I'm not dodging, but beyond that I can't say why it looks like our defenses aren't working for some folks.

Original poster - fencer is not a solo PVE class. We don't do much damage, but we don't take much damage either. You can start your COB and walk away while you're standing in front of a krayt and come back 10 mins later and still be standing there taking and dealing little damage. But, if you're actually going to try to do damage to a krayt, NS, kimo, geo, black sun, or other stronger mob, dream on. We don't do enough damage. We are great tanks for groups in order to keep mobs off our friends so they can deal damage without being in danger.
