Hi
I keeping reading snipets about caps on speed etc and wondered if anyone has a detailed explanation or a link to somewhere that does.
I am thinking in terms of - when is it not worth getting a +1h speed attachment etc because I read things like "because of the speed cap it will be wasted" etc. Not just talking about speed either but stuff like ranged defence and def vs knockdown etc etc.
Thanks

Here is how speed functions, as far as I understand it.
Your total speed is a combination of three speed factors: your weapon's speed, your personal speed bonuses (gained from skills, skill attachments, etc.), and the type of attack you execute.
1. The speed value of your weapon is your "base" speed value, and is equal to the number of seconds that elapse between attacks. So if your weapon has a speed value of 3, you must wait for three seconds after attacking before you can attack again. Obviously, the lower the better here.
2. Your personal speed bonus functions as a subtraction of percentage of weapon speed, and serves to lower your weapon's speed. Let's say that you have a bonus of +20 to One-Handed Weapon Speed. That equals a 20% reduction in your weapon's speed value, so if you use a weapon with speed 3, your adjusted speed will be 3 minus 0.20 * 3, or 3 minus 0.6, which is 2.4. So, obviously, you want that speed bonus as high as possible, which is why the Footwork tree in Fencing is way important.
3. Finally, your speed is modified by the kind of attack you execute. Many of the special moves are launched more slowly than the standard attack. I don't have the exact figures onhand, but some are executed at 1.5 times the speed factor, some at 2.25, etc.
The biggest thing to remember is that right now, there is a speed cap of 1. You cannot execute any attacks more quickly than once per second, so if your total speed factor dips below one, it gets rounded up to one and you lose any excess speed. That is frowned upon by many fencers, since our strength lies in speed; with the speed cap, many other professions can attack as quickly as we can yet with stronger weapons.
A question I have for those more knowledgeable than me: when exactly does the special move speed modifier fit into the equation? Is weapon speed modified by speed bonuses, and THEN modified by the attack speed? Or is the weapon speed modified by attack speed, and then modified by personal speed?

It doesn't matter when in the calculation any particular factor is appled, as multiplication is associative and commutative; i.e. a*b*c = a*c*b = b*a*c = b*c*a = c*a*b = c*b*a. Here "a" = weapon speed, "b" = special move speed, "c" = (1 - (personal speed)/100).
The question is, rather, is the 1.0 speed cap applied last, or before the special move speed? In the latter case, a move with a speed of 2 could be performed no faster than every 2 seconds.
As for the original question, I suppose that extra speed is useless when you hit a speed of 100 (100% decrease in speed, i.e. every move with every weapon is once a second), or at the point where the slowest weapon with the slowest move still takes one second.
The question I'd like answered is what, exactly, are the limits to personal skill modifiers going to be? Is there a post somewhere that lays this out?

you speaking of personal skillattachments? That limit has always been +25
And a spd over 100 will only help in the delay time of your specials.
