Ok, I read a post a while back about someone who wanted to make a macro that would take his helmet off, perform a special attack, then put the helmet back on. My first reaction was, boy is this retarted.
So last night, just for the heck of it, I took my macro that I use to take my armor off while i'm taking out a lair and put it to the same sort of use. I only use 3 pieces of armor so its not like i was putting a full suit on and off. I made a macro for each of 4 attacks i use often, dizzy2, spin2, blind2 and body hit 3.
The macro first removes my armor, does the attack, then puts the armor back on. The end result was that yes, I was able to use many more special attacks than if i left the armor on all the time. I did have to put a couple /pause 0.1;'s in there to avoid the "Slot Currently Occupied" errors, but that was nothing.
But isn't this just about the stupidest appraoch to fighting you have ever considered?
I suppose there is not really any way to balance this with the current fighting model and I do know that they put a new HAM cost program on Test Center back in December that I guess didn't work out for the Jan publish.
I guess my point is that when i went to boot camp a number of years ago, I don't recall the drill instructor telling me that I should take my helmet off, fire a shot, then put it back on.
Incidentally, I removed the macro after trying it out, I don't believe the developers intended for us to fight this way and I can't be bothered to "cheat". But I think if you've ever thught about it, you should try it just for kicks, the extra sound effect alone are enough to make you laugh out loud.

They withdrew the new HAM system to do more internal testing. I believe the combat rebalance will take care of this.
I agree it is kind of silly, but I'll share a somewhat humorous fight that came out of this system.
I was dueling one of the Master Rifleman/TKM templates back when I was a Blademaster/0440 doctor. The fights generally lasted forever.
In one 30 second sequence he pulled out a T21 and I immediately put my helmet on (made sure to hotkey it). He then switched to a Jawa Ion, and I quickly took the helmet off. This happened about 4 more times and eventually he just goes "Lol" and gave up on switching weapons.

Agreed. That's just plain stupid, and goes against the spirit of combat, even if the letter of the law allows it. That ranks up there with an exploit, in my book at least.

Just don't wear armor. I find that I can pretty much solo anything as long as I watch my specials and have a stim ready for those times I get knocked around too much.

I never wear armor either...I've been playing the game 6 months and have tried all the armor in the game and I really find it more of burden than an advantage...its just too dang hard on the mind pool especially when you need to use stims. I don't find I'many less likely to be killedbecause I don't wear armor.

No, I agree with all of you and I have cut way back on armor and do go without at times but that's a different issue. I guess all i was pointing out is that one of the most fundamental game dynamics can be exploited pretty badly just by arming, disarming armor.
It would be different if it took, say, 1 second to put on a helmet and another second to take it off. Therefore making the process take more like 30 seconds to perform one attack if you're wearing a full suit. Well, maybe taking it off could be quicker, just watching ice hockey those gloves come off mighty fast
But I guess the main thing that I both agree and disagree with is the HAM cost of anything. I have said before that IRL I am a competition pistol shooter and at the end of a long day at the range I come out just fine. But if I went to the range in SWG, I would be dead after firing a dozen rounds, heck I might even blind and stun myself in the process and that will happen if i'm a novice marksman or a master pistoleer.

I use an advanced padded chest with heat resist, it's only 33% in protection for most of what it covers, and all my specials cost me only around 3 points more per for the higher ones (cho mok, etc). It blocks two out of every three health hitsI take, and it tends to save me a lot of the time. I whip it off to heal, and I am fine.
