I just read the interview with Raph Koster who says that once Creature Handler's Mounts are in effect, most professions will be able to attack while riding. However, he said melee users are screwed.

This really irked me, as my primary professions are TK and CH. I have made the following proposal to allow for the 4 melee classes to be able to attack from the back of a mount.

Teras Kasi: Earning Expert Precision Striking unlocks the certification for the Magnetic Grappling Hook. As seen in use by Boba Fett, the MGH can be used while on the back of a mount. The damage is minimal (5-10 damage), with the effect of bringing the opponent to the brawler for a chance at a hit, and allows for a40% chance of Stunning opponent.

One Handed: Earning Expert Fencing Finesse unlocks the certification for the Vibro Whip. The Vibro Whip can be used while on the back of a mount. The damage is mediocre (55-145) and allows for a 40% chance of Blinding the opponent.

Two Handed: Earning Expert Sword Finesse unlocks the certification for the Vibro Grapplink Hook. The Vibro Grapplink Hook has a large device at the end with various poison tipped prongs. The damage is above average (75-155) and allows for a 40% chance of Poisoning the opponent.

Polearm: Earning Expert Polearm Support Abilities unlocks the certification for the Vibro Halberd. The Vibro Halberd has incredible reach, extending as needed from an adjustable base near the grip. The damage is above average (95-135) and allows for a 40% chance of Dizzying the opponent.

That's a pretty good idea, actually. Or they could take the easy way out and let the mount itself do the attacking. We need more weapon variation though, so I think I'd prefer your way of doing it.

I agree we better not get screwed on that...come on, in the old days before guns calvery rode in with ...hmmm...oh yeah swords. It would make no sense if we couldnt attack while on a creature mount.

Ralph Koster really seems to have something against melee players...

Thats true, but there are guns in this game. Then again, you could say we are all fools forcharging with swords. But I dont' mind being a fool.

On another not though I definitely see a lot of possibilities with creature mounts and such. Those are some fun ideas, and would love to see them implemented. Currently, though my mindset is that my personal creature mount will be used to get me from point A to B unitl vehicles come out. I am just hoping to get a creature that runs faster than me of course.

Days before guns? Rofl, people still attempted to use cavalry to varying degrees of success even up to World War I. Hell, in one battle they actually succeeded with a cavalry charge and sabered down some machinegunners. ;X Cavalry were certainly existant in the American Revolution, which I think was fought with guns. ;P The British used to unleash their feared cavalry wing on the flanks American forces at key times.

To be fair, here's the actual quote from the interview:

UGO
: Will players have direct control over vehicles and mounts or will it be rail-based travel (as in Dark Age of Camelot)?

RK: No, you'll have direct control. And there will be combat on the mounts. It'd be hard to do Teras Kasi [the unarmed combat profession of Galaxies]. Yeah, we're not doing DAOC style mounts. More like UO [Ultima Online] style mounts.

It still doesn't look promising from a melee perspective.. but I don't think we are totally screwed just yet.

And to be honest, Unarmed Combat would be a bit rough on a mount. I would expect the penalties to hit would be something like:

(worst)TKA -> Fencer -> TwoHanded -> Polearm (best)

I like the suggestions for quasi-ranged weapons in the melee lines. I think that would go a long way toward adding parity between us and ranged attackers.

if you really think about things making sense.... any weapon that requires two hands would not be too easy to fire from a moving mount.. it just doesn't make sense... the defense should be drastically reduced and the to hit modifier extremely reduced as well

<<if you really think about things making sense....>>

Nah, don't go bringing logic in here - let's stick to SciFi fantasy please.

All professions should have some form of attack available while mounted, to ensure their professions are compatible with the creature handling profession and to have FUN.
