Thread: Melee/Ranged Defense

Does anybody know how +melee/ranged defense skill mods work? Do they make your enemies chance to hit smaller the bigger they get? Or does it reduce the damage taken?

Also, how much does one skill point of melee or ranged defense decrease your enemies chance to hit/your damage taken (whicher it does).

Thank you in advance!

They reduce the chance your opponent has of hitting you. They do not reduce damage.

According to some testing done by pistoleers, 2 points of melee or ranged defense equals a 1% reduction in to hit (i.e. if they have a 50% chance to hit with your melee defense of 78, then increasing your melee defense to 80 would reduce their to hit chance to 49%). I haven't done independent testing, but within the center area of the curve, this seems reasonably accurate. At the extreme ends, the behavior seems a bit different.

Likewise, 1 point of accuracy directly offsets 1 point of defense.

This is the supposed formula:

ChanceToHit = 66% + (Accuracy - Ranged/Melee Defense) / 2

Obviously, this creates a problem if the Accuracy - Defense is -132 or less. I have therefore come to a conclusion that a hardcoded cap of accuracy exists somewhere. Alas, I have not been able to find it yet.

Any help with these technical issues would be most appreciated.

How do these skills work? Does the attackers "die roll" have to exceed your Defense number in order to hit? Or does it diminsh damage recv'd?

I believe it works as a die roll "to hit".. whereas ranged mitigation is what reduces damage from ranged attacks.

As far as I know -

Melee/ranged defense are the die rolls, you hit or miss depending on the skills of the two fighters.

Mitigation drops the damage received depending if it is melee or ranged.

Dodge means your toon ducks and rolls, fun to watch, makes you harder to hit. Again, the skill of the attacker/defender weigh into this.
