Thread: Another Question this time Melee Def
Guys i got such a good response on my speed question thought that i would ask another one.
Ok assuming melee def 20 what does that mean, If i undestand onehand toughness correctly, it is a strait deduction on damage, For example ifyou have onehand tough 30 that reduces damage by 30% is that correct and is melee def different.
Also dodge, if i have dodge 10 what does that mean??
Thanks in advance
I've always assumed that Melee Defense was a negative modifier to the opponents accuracy - in other words, it prevents hits rather than reducing damage.
As for dodge, I'd assume it's much the same, but I'm not sure how the modifier affects actual dodge rates.
Your assumption of Toughness is correct.
Melee Defense is a straight negative modifier to your opponent's accuracy. The same goes for Ranged Defense.
Dodge is, well... more complicated. It is calculated after the other determinations (accuracy minus defense, etc) have already been resolved. It is another chance to avoid an attack that would have otherwise landed.

Essentially dodge is so obscurely unpredictable rare and complicated none of us know what it does and hence it should be ignored, and you should hit people more to make up for this discrepancy.

A few days ago I would have agreed with the part of this stating how rare it was. However, if we are fortunate enough for the current experiments on TC to go through, then Dodge will be a huge help. As for the part stating that none of us know what it does is not correct.

I believe Raphayl is correct that defense is a straight negative modifier to opponent's accuracy. The problem is, I have absolutely no idea what that number means. You see those modified numbers every time you attack something, and they range from -50 to +50. They clearly are not percentages from a baseline of 50% to hit chance. Otherwise you would always miss at -50 and always hit at +50. So what these numbers actually mean, and what the value of say 5 melee defense is is unclear to me. Anyone actually know what +5 melee defense will do for you?
For instance, if base to hit is 75% and each point on the accuracy is half a percentage, then +50 wouldmean 100% hit chance and -50 would mean50% hit chance. So +5 melee defense would be worth an 2.5% less chance of you being hit.
They are sort of on a percentage... just not one that necessarily ends at 0 and 100.
For example, let's say that you begin at a 50% base change to hit, then you have a weapon that gives some positive or negative accuracy modifier, then you have a negative accuracy modifier for any terrain movement you are making, then you have an accuracy modifier if you are performing a special attack. This gives you your base chance to hit. To this we have some more modifiers: The movement modifier of the target (negative to your accuracy) and the Melee or Ranged Defense of the target. Finally you add in anyany status effects that penalize your accuracy or your target's defenses, or special accuracy modifiers for the type of target.
The final total is your chance to hit, which could be driven below 0% (no chance to hit) or above 100% (assured hit) in the extremes when all the modifiers stack for or against you.
