Well you could go a few ways.
Samurai
Pirate
Officer
Linebacker
Probably best to look for a Tailor on your server who can sit down with you and start crafting up a few wardrobe ideas.
Back durring the first few months I worked up money to pay a Tailor to raise in skills just so that I'd have the best clothing on the market.
It's fun having your own personal tailor.
Almost as fun as having one in real life.

I don't think its particularly odd. It aids roleplaying a lot to be aware of these things.
Frankly my characters are slightly vain and are always worried about their appearance. I note that most characters look like either some sad goth variant or other repetitive combo (dusters, hotpants, and bustiers/fleshwraps being popular). Then again, most players aren't roleplayers and don't have a house dedicated solely to storing clothes.
BTW In my opinion female characters are much easier to clothe due to there being some variety in designs. The expanded color pallette is a godsend.
For females there is a blouse that is vaguely piratical in design, Trimmed Blouse or something. I have one combo that is a mint green, black waist, mint green wrapped skirt. Combined with white gloves and boots, doing specials with a curved sword looks fantastic, even if it's not the most effective. Colors on hands and feet that contrast with the colors of body and arms can exploit slow phosphors and create an interesting display.

If you ask on the tailor forum for outfit suggestionsI'm sure you'll get many helpful replies.. just don't go in asking "NEED A TAILOR ON STARSTRIDER!111"

I had a formal suit made for a player event and for working in city hall. But the outfit is too sharp to restrict to such mudane activities.

Might want to check with an Image Designer, too. There's a physical difference between a broad-shouldered samurai and a lean, wiry fencer.
