Fencer Archive
Thread: Preparation for a FAQ sticky
Due to popular request, I want to start the ball rolling for a FAQ post (or FAQ section if need be.)
Having read every post on the forum (yes... all of 'em
) I already have a pretty good idea of what the frequently asked questions are. However, I would still like to hear your suggestions for FAQ questions.
There is no need to answer these questions here at this time. All that is currently requested is the questions themselves. I know that some questions come in a variety of flavors, but are the same lollipop... let's just lick it once. So in your post please type out your submission for a FAQ question (and any related satelite or sub-questions), and if you would be willing to put together a complete detailed answer for it when the time comes for it, or if you would rather let someone else create the answer.
Example post:
FAQ submission #1: "What do the various Fencer special attacks do? What are their applicablemodifiers, multipliers, durations, targets, and special effects? How can I make the best use of these attacks?"
*Yes, I would be willing to create a detailed answer for this FAQ.
FAQ submission #2: "What do the various Fencer abilities do? Do they stack with similar abilities from other professions? How can I make the best use of theseabilities?"
*No, I would prefer someone else create the answer for this FAQ.
No, these are not my real submissions, so feel free to use them if you like. I'll fill in any remaining holeswhen I'm finished with my current project. In fact... when completed my current project I can use the results as a basis for answering several of these questions.
The complete list of FAQ with answers will be far too large for a single post, so I believe the best method would be to create the detailed answer in it's own post, and link to the location from the FAQ so you only have to click on the question to be taken to the answer. I'll see if I can convince the Administrator to provide editting rights to just that one single post to keep it properly updated. Maybe he would be willing to do that.
Ok... so let's hear them......

we're on the way!
My most concern question:
1. Does all the defenses mod stacks even they are in different professions?
2. If so, are these mods working properly?
should i attain master brawler with my fencer, and if so, what advantages do i get?
what other profession/professions should i get to compliment fencer?
"Where can I find a Fencer trainer?"
*I could dig up the data on this one.*
and:
"Is there a speed limit for 1-handed weapons?"
*I am not too good with stat crunching, so someone else would be better explaining this one.*

What are the formulas for defense vs. XXX (if im +90 knock down is that 90% not knocked down?)
What are some tactics for staying alive while fighting/What am I doing wrong, why am I dieing all the time when lots of people on here seem to be highly successful?
1. Attack smaller oponenets. One of the people who recently said he's walking away from fencer said that he keeps getting DB'd all the time and that if the mob hits through his armor he goes in one shot. This means he's attacking the very highest monsters in the game because they are doing upwards of 6-800 damage per hit. *anyone* should die if that goes through their armor. The key here is that you can get just about the same exp by fighting weaker things that die faster and dont kill you off all the time.
2. Know the ham costs of your specials and the weapons that eat up your ham, eating up your ham leaves you vulnerable. A stun baton has high ham costs. I didnt realise this until I started switching around to other weapons. Mess around with ganderiffi batons and vibro swords.
3. Wear armor. Or remove armor. Wearing armor gives a good chance of absorbing damage done by weapons. I lived a lot longer once I started wearing armor. It also takes away your ability to regenerate your HAM. If you came from another proffesion and have gotten used to your ham bars regenerating, but you picked up armor since your a meleer, removing it will allow your ham to regenerate. I think the key here is balance and knowing what your up against. I wear only a few pieces of armor, and I dont wear armor that affects mind regeneration too much. This is because I have a high mind regeneration rate and can easily heal my health and action bars using stim packs. I specifically wear high kinetic resistant armor since I only fight creatures and creatures seem to use only kinetic damage. The situation is different for PvPers, which I am not one of.
4. When grouped, use the range so that you dont get attacked so much. If you use pets, or have other meleeing members in your group, you can utilize range totry and force thetarget to nottarget you. Creatures, on average, target whatever is closest to them. If something is slightly farther and doing much more damage, they may switch toattacking thattarget. I use this to my advantage by using the ganderiffi bataon. I can usually get a max range of between 5 to 7 meters. This puts me further out than my pets. So most of the time whatever we are fighting targets the pet and not me. I rarely takedamage because I am almost always grouped with my pets. Of course, I have to heal them a lot, but its worth it.
5. Know how to exit battle when the situation gets too rough. If a creature is not attacking you, you canusually use /peace to get out of the fight. This allows you to heal yourself or other members of your group without the delay due to battle. This also allows you to run away or do whatever. Also, if yourrunning away from something that is still attacking you, peace wont immediately work.Just keep running. If you can get 1 or200 meters infront ofyour opponent you can usually peace out of the fight.
6. Grouping vs. Non-Grouping. If you usually solo, you might want to try grouping some,if you go after whatyou usually solo, you ought to be able to take it downeasier with a little help. If you usually group (like me), and youstart going solo and things are killing you left and right, you mighthave to adjust your tactics a bit. Thanks to my pets and my friends, I'm almost always in a group. I dont know how I'd fare anymore or what I could take out now if I just went alone.I've gotten 5 or 6 fencerskillssince the last time I seriously went solo. I would deffinetely have toadjust mytactics if I went alone.
7.Know what you're attacking. When you select a creature and hold and click your mouse on it, a littlecircle thing appears with a box labelled examine. If you select examine, you get all the information about thetargets armor and resistances. This lets you know which creatures are resistant to kinetic damage and stun damage (the two types of damage that fencers do). Most creatures have some resistances to kinetic damage. Few creatures haveresistances to stun damage. There are quite a few cases whereusing a normal kinetic damage weapon is nearly useless whereas using a stun baton is the best thing you can do.Some creatures are highly resistant to both types of damage and have armor on top of that to boot. Specifically the voritor on one of the high end planets has: 10k Ham, and something like 80-100% resist to both stun and kinetic damage. Attacking those would be nearly pointless. Compared to the giant sand beetle on tatooine with 10k Ham, light armor (adds 25% resist across the board, I believe), and 15% resists to everything. That would be a much easier kill.
Other questions that might be asked are...
What is a gaffi stick?
Thats a ganderiffi baton, right?
What is this butter knife everyone keeps refering too?
Thats a vibro blade, right?

How do you caculate the ham costs?
Do not have answer for you but the stragity guide on SWG gives you some insite. In how it works, but from what I see, the type of weapon an using armor does effect the costs. As well as how your secondary stats are set up. I got a perfect bothan set up for secondary an primaries that fit fencer an pistoleer took me 4 months to figure it out.
How can you figure out the speed your attacking at?
Good question, lately with fencer I noticed my speed is just uber fast as a master. But thier is a VERY nasty attack dely attached, if i switch from gun to fencer I have a 2 second dely before I start swinging.
How can I caculate my DPS?
Sorry bud this ins't like everquest were DPS is the key to everything. You rely more on skill an tactics to survive. Don't try to emulate EQ it wont work. ^-^
What is good armor?
well I have expermented with much armor, I spent over 10 mil incredits testing rare types an standard high quality types of armors on shadowfire that fit with fencer. The best that I have discovered if you want really low ham cost with decent resistances is Tantenl Rancor segement enhansed armor. It provides reistances to everything if built right. An if spliced well it can provide far more. A good helm would be Manburi enhansed by kryat or rancor segements. If your heavy into pvp, you NEED to get a composite chest plate an helm both with 53+ resistances to everything. Aleast you can take a flamer hits easier how many times has compsite saved my life.
A fencer only needs 2 peicies of armor to be low ham costs an very effective. Helm an Chest is all you need an a PSG. Other then that using more armor only handy caps you, this set up is aslo good if your a pistoleer.
What weapons are the best for you at your current skill?
Hands down Vibroblade. If made right you can see a 2.5speed with 42 to 178 damage vibroblades. It takes a weaponsmith that has very highquality ore to make such a fine blade. An then a stun baton for other creatures kentic weapons cant harm to easly.
Does other defences, resistances stack with fencer.
YES! they do...
how would I have 47 range defence, 56 melee defence 55dodge an 71vs knockdown an 60vs postion down..... Wont tell you my build but think about it.. combinding a second class with fencer DOES WORK WELL.
If you send me an Email though the message boards or contact me in game on shadowfire I am always willing to lend my knowledge to others. I know far more about fencers then most do, since all my experince is done by testing this an that. (chuckles) An when I test something I run it though the ringer.
As a reminder, this forum is just the collecting spot for the questions that will go into the FAQ thread. When someone here is submitting a question, it doesn't necessarily mean that person is asking the question. It just means they want to see that question included.
To keep the size of this thread reasonable (as I will be doing copy/paste operations on it to turn it into a FAQ) and only containing relevant info, please do not answer these questions here. I thought I mentioned this in the lead post, but perhaps I wasunclear. All that is needed at this point is whether or not you would be interesting in creating the answer in full detail when the time comes.
I sure appreciate all the submissions. You guys are doing great!
