FWIW, the designer in charge of combat balance feels that commandos are correct right now. He feels that the melee guys are the ones at disadvantage. That seems to accord with what we are seeing on the replies here.

What they seem not to get is that fencer is a weak sister of a weak sister. We need a substantial boost in defense and something to compensate for the speed we end up wasting because fo the one second cap on attacking.

I say we need a bonus to speed and a lessened penalty to accuracy while we are moving, that way we can actually run people down, and have a chance... Once we get up there, unless they are melee, we should stand a very good chance unless they have some melee in them.
