(skip down to the line if you don't like reading and nostalgia )

I have been playing this game off and on for about 6 months now. In that time I have gotten to 4/3/0/3 rifleman, and 4/2/2/2 rifleman .. ultimately dropping it to try out another combat profession out of boredom. Now I'm about to master rifleman, and again I'm bored with it. There just isn't anything exciting to me about using the same "tried and true" method of taking down ____ lairs with ____ rifle.

When I first got this game, fencer was the first profession that jumped out at me. However back then when all my friends still played straying too far from eisley to risk those ambushing "squills" was unheard of. Needless to say we all got xp VERY slowly (I honestly don't think I flew to another planet until after a month of starting the game lol.) Being told by everyone around me that fencer was no good and took too long, and being "graced" by a gift from the heavens (a dlt20a with a powerup on it that gave it like +20 max damage therefore making it "uber" in my eyes) brought me to where I am now. Ahh memories.

Eventually I found group hunting and solo hunting overall was much more fun then the "1337 d00ds" pvp sessions going on in town (counterstrike flashbacks ahoy). So I picked up ranger. And again here I am now .. with a general understanding of the ins and outs of all professions and leading the antarian rangers of starsider and having a great time. Except for my rifle.

---------------------------------------------------

(skip to next line if you don't like reading whining, haha)

I'm not saying rifle is bad, its obviously been the FOTM for .. over a month (legions of t21's blocking my view of the ticket collector .. grr) but I'm bored with it. Whats the point of getting to where your skills are maxed out? Its boring .. the only "challenges" I have anymore are harvesting as much of a given organic as I can before it shifts out. So its time for me to (hopefully) go back to my original "dream" profession: fencer.

My first idea was to drop from master ranger to 0040. (If you ever think your profession is broken, pointless, or useless hop on the rangers board for a few minutes .. PRACTICALLY NOTHING WORKS. But I love it anyway ) From there I wanted to try throwing in as much pistoleer/fencer as possible. NOT because of the dodge stacking, but merely because 1) I wanted to try pistoleer as well 2) I thought having some decent ranged abilities would not only be more useful to groups and solo hunting but would allow me to PvP a little more effectively.

---------------------------------------------------

Instead of gimping my main character I created "Leesil" the ravenous bothan on Eclipse. Goal was to be 0/0/4/0 ranger, master fencer and 0/0/4/1 pistoleer. (which leaves 7 skill points which I either would have used for ranger wayfaring or some added pistol skills.) I started on friday with some pistol grinding, then casual play up until now (late sunday night) and am 4/2/4/0 scout, 0/0/1/0 pistoleer, and 0/2/0/0 brawler. I started in theed until I got to box 3 in pistol then headed to dantooine. From there on it was voritor hunter groups to this point. Hah, I was actually very lucky because the dant carnivore meat is VERY high quality and after harvesting over 20k of it I now have: a nice sliced version of every pistol a pistoleer can use, 4 nice gaderaffi batons (some nice speed some nice damage), a complete set of 67% kinetic ubese, and over 200k in the bank. Not bad for 2 and a 1/2 days work. If I can find some good vasarian brandy I'll be able to solo savage quenkers without a problem (always doctor buffed). So if this build goes well thats probably what I'll make my main character be.

However during all of this I have had a hard time deciding if melee/ranged together are worth it. Most of the people I hunt with use ranged professions (I know quite a few dropped TKA for rifleman) and more and more CH's drop every day. That leaves us needing a tank. I could obviously make a straight combat profession only melee character but I have to keep that 0/0/4/0 ranger. So from there I came up with:

Master Brawler
4/4/0/0 Fencer
4/0/4/0 Swordsman
4/0/0/0 TKA
0/0/4/0 Ranger.

I know that is more then 250 points, lol, but I don't know if master brawler is better then a few extra boxes in another profession or not. I know this kind of takes advantage of defense mod stacking, but it seemed to be the best balance of skills to me. Maybe it isn't, thats where I need feedback.

I'm also aware of all the crazy combat changes that will be going on over the next few months. But having to restart a build is not a big deal to me, I enjoy building up new templates. Please discuss your opinions of the two builds I'm naming "leesil" and "tank". I'd like to have a nice balance of offensive power as well as defensive. Please also offer alternative templates but remember, have to keep 0/0/4/0 ranger.

Thanks for your time

P.S. Sorry for all the wind-blowing rants, silly asides, and generally not knowing the ins and outs of every melee profession. However I'd really like for this to be a serious thread with some thought out imput. Thanks

Sorry I also forgot:

I don't want the "current best" defense mod stacked templates that people are running right now. I know tank kind of looks like them, but I'm trying to go for the best balance of defense AND offense.

Possibly "tank" should be master fencer with a few other professions lower level bests thrown in.

Have at it

Sorry I can't really help much here, I am new to fencing and melee in general. I used to be 2/4/4/4 BH, and melee seems to much more effective than ranged - I can beat stuff at 0301 Fencer that I could never kill with my BH.

Good luck on finding a template that suits you!

If you are seriously wanting to tank, andwant to be a fencerdon't pick up swordsman. As of right now, your best bet would be master fencer/brawler and either 4004 or 4000 tk. Another thing, you want to keep 0040 ranger? why not keep 0030 since tracking players isn't working and you have no want for pvp. Just some thoughts. Anyway the defenses in pikeman and swordsman aren't worth the skill points you'd be better off just putting those points into medic.
