Thread: Anyone play a non-maxed Fencer?

It seems like a lot of fencers have also mastered other skill trees just to get added combat bonuses. I was just wondering if anyone out there had just plowed through 1-handed Brawler and gone right into Fencer without pumping everything else up. And if so, how successful have you been?

My character concept involves becoming a skilled fencer, but I have less time than average to devote to the game. I'd rather get to fencer and have fun playing a decent fencer than take eons to get there but have an Uber-fencer. Will I be shooting myself in the foot (or aiding my enemies in shooting me in the head) with such an attitude?

Thanks.

You'll be shooting yourself in the foot. Why?

You NEED other skills in times of emergency to give your character that extra kick. You need those stim packs so you can minimize your downtime.

You need that gun so you can finish that creature who incapped you and you just got up and its too dangerous to walk up to it again simply to do another 60 damage.

You need scouting so you can run your ass off over hills when evil space pirates decide to gang up on you five to one and all you have is a sword and they all have rifles.

You don't have to really "build" those other skills up, but you will find that those other skills will save your life and make leveling your fencer a lot faster.

Well, I'm not going totally one-dimensional.

I do have other starting skills: scout, medic, marksman. I am advancing up the scoutexplorationtrack (to run faster) and the pistol track (I can shoot critters a time or two before they run up to me).

All of the above I can do without slowing my advance towards Fencer. What will slow me down is also trying to advance up other brawler tracks, and perhaps other marksman tracks, just to gain the defensive combat bonuses. Those could really sap XP from my grind towards Novice Fencer.

Any more thoughts?

Well I am doing just straight Fencing and no other Brawler type skills. I have training and skills in Pistols but that only goes up as I need it and is not my main focus. I know there are other skill trees that would provide added bonuses, but I am playing the game for fun, not math, and those things just do not fit into my character concept. Will I be not as effective in combat as someone that devoted all thier skills and time into getting high combat skills in everything? Perhaps, but really I don't think it is going to be that much of a problem over the long term.

Besides, this whole game is about having fun and I am finding my current path fun.

having scout to throw those increased melee damage traps helps alot too. Especially in the beginning.
