Thread: sick of complaints about pvp gimping
So your telling us all to become ranged cause we get owned trying to get close to someone with ranged combat....
if thats the case **edit** you, melee classes need to have as equal of a chance to win in combat as your basic rifleman, carbinner, or pistoleer...
Well actually I do not really think that that this board has been a particular hotbed of pvp complaints. Indeed I think this is one of the most civil and substantive boards on the forum (and my addiction to this game goes so far as to compel me to at least skim all the profession forums). Since the board is in part supposed to be a place for dialogue on issues that will form some of the basis for our profession representative to have dialogue with the developers, it would in any event be an appropriate place for what you regard as complaints. Not reading the forum at all is certainly an option if the discussion bothers you too much.
As it happens I do not totally disagree with what your underlying point appears to be. I think that gettinga ranged weapon user into reach in pvp should be a big challenge. I do think that the devs have done a poor job on line of site issues in a way that arguably requires some artificial advantage for melee to compensate. After all shooting through hills and buildings (putting asidethe radar-bestowed omniscience/stealth issue)is not what one would call an accuratemodel of the physical world oreven of a star wars universe. If you look at most of the issues on the fencer list, they have a lot more to do with how fencers perform once they get in range than with the biggest and most legitimate PVP disadvantage for fencers---getting into range. The one exception is the kiting issue. If what you ultimately are saying is that fencers should not complain about kiting, that would have been a clearer message.
I never see any problem with people stating what their view is on an issue but in a sense isn't saying don't complain about kiting the same thing as saying you do not want to listen to any opposing view on that? I also happen to prefer that everyone agree with me (never happens) but expecting that no one will ever state their disagreement is a tad unrealistic, don't you think?

Well I am a master fencer on shadowfire the first to achive this goal. I noticed a lot of diffenences in pvp aspect of the class that most people probly won't or don't care to take notice about. Yes its harder for us melee to close the distance to catch up an kill those that use ranged weapons, it really does suck. But thier are alot of problems underlining the fencer class that comes up repeatedly if you watch carefuly.
1) From time to time, you will notice your range defences, an melee defences will work or will not work. How many times have I been killed by a novice pistoleer, marksmen an or carbineer. To many times, as I would get hit 95% of the time by thier shots. An yes I did ask them how far they were into thier profession, some just a few bars in.
2) Dodge in PVP doesn't work as intended, I noticed this right off that bat I dodge a little bit in PVE but I do not dodge hardly ever in PVP. I am still watching.
3) Along the lines of TKA vs Fencer. A tka can take incomming fire, as well as melee like a god. No joke I seen 1 tka kill many in a cantina with out hardly getting touched. While a fencer gets easly rocked.
4) Fencer defences are not correctly inline at this time with how the game is revolving. We kinda are the weakest class in the game at the moment vs. other melee when they reach master we get screwd pretty fast. We can't touch a TKA, we can hardly kill a master swordsmen if he is lucky to stand around an take the hits. Usaly they just mind bleed you an run like sissies.
5) My biggest favorate problem about fencers, I spam my specials so fast an my specials cost me 60+ to use that I kill myself far faster then my openent can kill me. The use of fencers using mind + health really really hurts. How many times have I bleed my own mind pool off just to get incap'd a second later is to many to count.

But I did find ways to make it easier to draw our enemies to us.
1) Use open to public homes to draw your range combatant in. In other words draw them into small rooms or spaces in which you have the advantage in.
2) Use buildings to block line of sight or other objects.
3) You can use armor, but do not use to much its a hard gimme so to speak. I still hate to wear armor as my ham costs for specials are redicualois high.
4) Take pistols, or carbine to level 4 skill in marksmen along with support 4. Get the ablity to use suppression fire. It works although make sure you switch to melee asap when you close. Alot of ranged pvp'ers would be slightly surpised to be surpessed an then beaten down in combat.
Anyhow not much more to say, fencers have alot of problems mainly with the fact the class is not properly balanced for what it is supose to do. Damage output wsie I have no problems with they got some good damage, but defenses an resistances clearly arnt workign properly.
Trazu: so you want us to take up a gun to even the odds? Forget it! I chose Fencer because that's the combat profession that would give me the most challange. As a Trandoshan I need to be challanged almost constantly, because that's how my race is. With guns you don't get that challange...things are too easy to kill. My son, Trissan (on another server) found this out. He's going for TK and Smuggler (I don't approve but it's his decision, his life) and he's told me that he doesn't get the same satistfaction of killing something with a gun as he does when he uses his fists. There's hardly any risk at all if you use a gun and know what you are doing, hense why I view guns as a cowards weapon.
ooc: Just thought I'd add to the debate using my characters PoV...though I hold most of the same views personally. While yes the 'too easy to kill things with a gun' bit makes it easier to go up the skill trees, you don'tget that'fear of death' feeling as often when using a ranged weapon. I know, I know, death has no meaning right now, but I still take every fight seriously as if my characters does would mean something drastic. But then, that is both the cautious sideand my roleplayers side talking. ![]()
also, before the hotfix, you could have used a flamethrower. what a whopper of a surprise for them, huh?
"i'll have it MY way, **edit**!"
i once threw a rock at a pharple. i think that's the extent of my ranged abilities.

Witter you got a good point about one melee class getting all the attention from the dev's an still complaining. When in fact that single melee class is well beyound any other in the game at this time. Currently TKA is the best melee class an profession by choice many. I would honestly like to see Polearm, fencers that sorely need to be looked into adjusted properly an fixed. Swordsmen on the other hand do need some adjustments for the better an tweaking on some of thier skills that honestly do make them as overpowerd in a sense to that of a tka. As it stands fencers an pikemen are the bottom rung melee class. We got our skills an our ablities an such but were currently underdoged with the lack of proper adjustments over the course of the games evuliotion in time with the other classes that have been tweeked.
Oh yeah.. Get Carbineers fix'd I'd love to see them working properly. I am not a carbineer but I do understand how they feel.

My only complaint about PvP is that when I get into range, I get a system message spammed at me that says "You are out of range." I'm 3m away from the jerkface, my max range is 5m, and I'm somehow "out of range", as the system message I am now good friends with tells me. I have no problem running up to my opponent without dying first...it's just that when I do get there, they run, I follow, and I'm actually IN my weapon's range, but the freakin' server-client lag crap prevents me from having a gaffi beat-down on the fella! Rarrrrr!!!
Me and my sister just had a friendly duel about 10 minutes ago. I had a sword and she had a carbine. She kited me, right off the bat, so I chased her. I ended up getting the same message, even at 2m away from her.
I used One-Handed Lunge, which caught her by surprise, and incapacitated her. Now the ability has a purpose.
But I share your annoyance of that message.
