Rather vague question, simply being they all are important. It really depends on your template and how you play.
Melee and Range defense are important as they are your first means of defense (but only having 45 is not that significant than if you can get 125).
The state defenses and defense versus XXX are important, but again udner 50, you probably will not see that much benefit.
The dodge skill is important, but yes again, unless you get high levels of it and actually fight with a pistol or 1-h weapon, provides no benefit.
With out dodge, the center of being is not very effective.
Thus, all 3 defense trees are equally improtant to have completed for a fencer player.

yep. fencer is one of those dying breeds of class where each tree serves a diff, but equally important function. dodge is good, but if your not master (therefor with all the fencer dodge bonuses) your damage output wont be good with 1 handed weapons. on the flipside, if you dont equip a baton, you wont get dodge effects at all. id say any of the 2 lines that gives state defenses would be the best choice. speciall stacked up on tkm or something else.

Footwork. Our main asset as a profession is the ability to dodge 70% of our opponents attacks. The Footwork tree does just that. Once you finish that, advance in whatever tree you want.

eh, i think id get a few boxes of speed before dodge. but definitly make dodge your next priority. i dnno, iv just always went up the speed tree first in any profession iv mastered.
i think he might of ment more along the lines of a good tree for defensive stacking though.
