Thread: Pansies use guns (another rant about how great melee is)
I started this game with the intention to use ranged weapons. I thought about being a Smuggler, but they didn't smuggle anything, but I had pistol skills which were great. I decided that a carbine would go nicely along with those skills so I got a few skills in the Carbine tree, like Advanced Counterinsurgency, Intermediate Marksmanship and Intermediate Special Abilities.
I was suprised to find that even though I just had Expert Pistol, I could demolish things single-handedly with pistolsthat I would get wastedfrom if I was using my carbine.
Anyway, my friend had been onlya Fencer the whole time, and while she did get alot more wounds than I did, it looked like she was having a lot more fun. You know, getting in the fray, adreniline, all that good stuff. Finally when I saw her take out four Imperials in a row, bam-bam-bam-bam, I knew what I wanted to do.
Now, climbing the Fencer and Teras Kasi trees I have decided to give up all ranged weapons (I hate to think of giving up the Carbine Special Abilities 60,000 combat xp) but really, the game was WAY too easy by standing back and shooting things.
Two nights ago my friend and I were taking out the Nightsister camp on Dathomir (we had two gurreks with us- so it wasn't that amazing) and along comes a PA with about 10 members and a few pets, all using "fire knockdown", "underhand shot" and "pistol whip". The poor Witches couldn't do a single thing to defend themselves, the were all just standing there getting knocked around, knocked down and too stunned to move. If the Withches had charged them, it would have been all over, but even Dark Jedi Masters get killed if you have more than six people in your group shooting them at the same time.
So, to recapitualte the point of this post, this game is too easy when you have a gun. To all of you melee people out there: good work, way to be a man (or woman). Don't take the easy way out and underhand shot or low blow or fire knock downyour way to the top from a nice distance of thirty meters, get in there, stick your neck out and have a good time.

P.S.
The PA in the Witches camp stopped at a point and the two of us took out one of their little villages, but as soon as we cleared everyone out except the Nightsister Elder, they charged in and took our hard earned kill. 8)

So what you're saying is that you and a friend (both meleers) are hardcore because you use two 10k ham, ar2 pets. On top of this you think guys with guns (10 of them to your 2) are overpowered cause they can keep them on the ground? I'm sorta confused. Could the witches really do anything against you with 2 gurrecks on them? If the witches switched agro to the two of you and not your pets (which are stronger than rancors mind you) would you have stood a chance?

My understanding of lunge/dizzy is that you can keep NPCs down just as easily. If I'm mistaken in this please let me know.
Dizzy / lunge does not work all the time. I have been to the night sisters camp several times and I have tried that combo. And I'd say (guesstimating) that it works 25% of the time on NPC humanoids that lvl or less. And the ham costs af the multiple attempts (and I wear no armor) make me very vulnerable, since I am at such a close range. There is a BIG difference from our "combo" to knock down (which, let me point out, that it only works on humanoids).
I try more intimidating than kd'n, since the costs are lower and all it does is lower the chance for them to hit me. I may try dizzy / lunge 1 or 2 times before I just cho sun there arses to kingdom come. LONG LIVE MELEE COMBATANTS!!

melee knockdown and ranged knockdown are entirely different stories.
Playing a ranged class is inifintely easier because of the base game mechanics. Its not that one type is 'better' than the other or that ranged users are 'pansies' it is merely a result of the way the game is made.
PC Melee combat suffers from many penalties that aren't encountered with NPC melee combat. A PC's effective melee range is about 5 meters, at which point they ALWAYS receive a negative to-hit modifier, while many pistol users receive a postive, lets not even mention the poor pikemen trying to use a long vibro axe (permanent -50 to-hit? not good.)
The othermain issue is simply range, NPCs have a 20m or so effective melee range to prevent PCs from breaking out of combat and kiting too easily. PCs however cannot hit a running moving target due to latency issues.
I agree that melee is more entertaining in PvE, though I have to say PvP is an utter slap in the face for melee-types.
