Fencer Archive
Thread: Where did this come from and is it any good?
So I've been working my way up the 1-handed tree in brawler, heading (obviously) for fencer. This is my first time delving into SWG's combat, so I'm a little confused by this gaffi baton I found on the bazaar while upgrading my weapon. In addition to the normal min/max damage, range bonuses, etc, it has this:
Damage over Time
Type: Fire
Attribute: Mind
Strength: 97
Duration: 70s
Potency: 2%
Uses: 1287
So Uses and attribute makes sense, and Fire would probably determine whether or not this gets through an armor's special protection (if it has that), but what about the rest? Does it do 97 per second for 70 seconds, or after 70s does the target take 97 mind damage? And what does the potency affect? And was this worth the 2k I spent on it since the regular damage is only 49-98 speed 5.8 (I bought this before comparing with the curved sword).
And since there is no creator tag, I'm assuming this is a looted item, not something made with a rancor tooth or anything?
all that means is that it does 97 dam every 70 secs, i believe. i don't think it was worth 2k though, especially with the low damage and slow speed.

It means that a hit from this weapon will place a burning effect for 97 Damage a tick on the mind pool for a duration of 70 seconds on the traget.
You will have the total uses listed. One tick will take 10 seconds. So a single effect will make 97 damage every 10 seconds for a total duration of 70 seconds (or a total of 679 raw damage).
And yes, it is a looted item. DoT effects cannot be pla<ced on weapons by players.
I would advise using this weapon in conjunction with another Player made weapion, using this one for the initial hit to place the DoT, then swith to your "attack" weapon.

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. 97 dmg per 70 seconds would be really weak, and 97 per sec really strong, so I figured I either got screwed, a really good deal or (as it turned out) a kinda ok deal since the damage is done 7 times.Am I correct in assuming it only consumes one use per attack hit, not per DoT tick?
That's what I've been trying, but after a few days playing around with it, I don't think it's going to be much use.Since the 1-handed special moves I have can only focus on the health bar, the DoT just spreads damage around, not really doing much to kill things faster. Of course, if there's some tactic I'm overlooking, feel free to correct my n00biness.

Also, the potency is really low, just means it's a 2% chance of the DoT going off. So don't expect to see it going off alot.
Urk, if that's what the potencymeans, this is probably going over the mantlepiece (at least as soon as they add fireplaces and the "/move up" command). If I only have a 1-in-50 chance of doing an extra 679 mind damage (which takes 70 seconds to happen) on top of an average regular damage of 75, I think it'd probably bea waste of the 5-6 seconds of combat. I'd rather just get in a couple more hits with a vibroblade or curved sword. I'm doing mostly PvE right now, maybe when my melee speed gets up or I start getting into PvP I'll come back to this.
Thanks again for explaining these things to a combat novice.
