Thread: Camouflage and PvP
Is anyone here a Ranger, and used camo to garner an advantage in PvP? I've found that the red dot system really puts melee at a disadvantage. (We gotta be close... but to GET close we gotta sneak up... but we can't sneak up cuz of the radar...)
Seena, debating whether or not to keep her Ranger skills...

It's debatable. Bugs aside, it's intent at this timeis to be a more powerful version of mask scent, that can also be applied to others.
As Thror said, many in the Ranger community have asked that it serve some additional purpose, i.e. as a PvP tool. The ideas have ranged from subtle, such as changing the color of a dot, or the range at which you 'pop' on radar, to the extreme, full-blown off the radar stealth. I'm not sure if we'll find a happy medium for it, or if it's even going to be given a PvP use at this time.
I like the more subtle, changing the color of your dot on radar, too. I think that full blow stealth from it would be way way too overpowering, even if it would be fun for a while. ![]()

Fencer 1/4/4/3, Ranger 4/4/4/3
0/3/1/1 Fencer and 2/1/3/2 Ranger here. I'm sorry to say that at this time Camo does NOT work against other players.. However, the Ranger community are requesting that changes be made to our profession that will allow us some functionality against NPCs and other Players.
Among those changes is a request that active Camo change the color of our dot on the radar to yellow so that we appear to the unwary eye to be nothing more than a non aggressive critter or NPC. Hopefully this particular change will see the light of day but I'm not holding my breath.
Addendum
I think some Rangers have also requested that camo remove you from the radar COMPLETELY when you're not moving or attacking... with movement allowed at the master level. I don't know about this one personaly. It might be overpowering. But there you are!
Thanks Thror,
I like the yellow dot idea the best actually.... at least if you don't have to be Master Ranger to use it.
So what is the point of camo then?
Seena
Actually I think they should show up as Yellow if they are inside city boundaries...but when they are out of the cities limit then they should have the ability to totally drop off your Radar.
The only problem withtotally dropping off of radaris that Camo can be applied to anyone. If it worked for Master Rangers, it would be able to work for anyone a Master Rangercamo'd.That wouldlead to a new trend in all of PvP: stealth battles.
For them to make it work for just the Master Ranger's person, they would have to tear down the whole camo system, and rebuild it a new way. The only thing more camo skill seems to give you, at the moment, is the ability to apply more planetary camo kits.

The radar system that totally gimps melee in PvP. I did post this on the Devs board, and apparently they had to initiate thihs kind of system, because in other MMPORGS people were using spyware programs to garner an advantage (so the solution is to make everyone visible to everyone)..
I'm not sure how they'd stop that from happening with camo also, but it sure is nice to dream about!

That's about exactly it too, Seena. Radar was a bad idea. Well, it was neat AS an idea, but in implementation it turns out to be suckage, forlack of a better word.
Even if you could eliminate the hacks, the use of radar-clearing camo would come to rulePvP,because it's a form of stealth. PvPboils down to basically3 things IMO: detection, damage, and range. Almost any good tactic you find plays to these three things.Stealth on its own can take care of 2 of those 3 things. And IMO, if a single tool has the potential to endup being the end-all be-all of the PvP system, like stealth has in so many games, it's probably overpowered. It's leaves little to be desired to be one of the 'naked' people out there in a PvP battle, because you are a christmas light blazing away on the radar-of-death, and that makes you a heck of a target.
To respond to Mik-Kael, this isn't real life. Yes, it's a common military tactic to wear camoflage, but that is an across the board tactic used by EVERYONE. To equate whatradar-clearing camo would be like in this game, imagine this. The army goes into battle. Before battle, they grab out 30-50% of their troops, and paint them day-glo orange. Those are the people that didn't get camo. Sound fun?
