Thread: would-be fencer needs advice

i'm in a bit of a pickle here, and was hoping i could get some advice.

while all my guildies and buddies were working their combat skills, i was busily working at building our player city. when i finally hit master architect, i decided to hang up my T-Square and do what i'd been wanting to do: become a Fencer.

after a few ugly run-ins with moronic groups (why is it that good groups that know what they're doing seems to be more the exception than the rule?) i picked up my sword and went solo. which was good, up until about 1HS III.

and this is the pickle i'm in. soloing is pretty much no longer an option for me, as it's counter-productive at this point. but my fighter guildies are all way too big for me to play with. they hunt on lok and dath. if i were anything but a meleer, i might be able to join them. as it is, they're all ranged, so that would make me the tank. heh. right. i don't think so.

i've all but given up on "pick-up groups," but have no real choice left. so the least i can do is find groups that are less likely to get me killed.

what should i be hunting?

i'm based out of tat, and i want to stay close to home if at all possible. i'm not looking for "mad xp" like you used to find on endor in beta, just something a little better than solo xp. being a melee, i'm the front line and the first to go down, so i'd prefer to fight things that don't kill you in one hit, or at the very least doesn't DB you right off the bat.

any tips?

(p.s., if you're on eclipse/tat and need decent furniture, give me a holler. ^_^)

Outside of the cities.. there are Rills, worts, and lesser desert womp rats all over the place. Its a very nice area to collect a lot of exp and not worry about getting killed. After you get your skills up, I recommend you start doing Tusken raids

ok you can solo destroy missions but when you get the mission unequip your weapon so you get lower level missions this should fix it.

That sounds about right, I'd hit that Tuskan camp outside Wayfar for that skill level, at Master 1hs you should be able to camp yellow/white con mobs a lot easier - with good armor of course - you may even want to try a battle ground with a friend or two as well at that level, the xp there is quite nice.

thing is, money really isn't an issue for me, so i don't bother with missions. and worrts, rills, and their ilk only give 100-200 xp per. with a 70,000 xp target, that's a looong road.

basically, i'm gonna need to start hunting for groups and was wondering what kinds of groups a 1HS III should be looking for.

Any group you can get into. Just look for a leader that knows that they are doing and works quickly.

You might want to try Tatoonie, the Tuskens or something there. Always seems to be a lot of groups on that planet.

One word... 'scyks.'

They can be found not too far outside city borders on Tatooine. They will con yellow to you, but when I was expert 1h swords like you, I hunted them all the time solo with no problem, at about 500 xp per kill. I'd be at half HAM after fighting about two, but that's why I learned some medic skills.

Also, once you do hit master 1h swords, you can go from soling 2 for a total of about 1000, to soloing 4-6 with spin attack.

Until you get spin attack though, be careful you don't pull the whole groups of them, because they'll all aggro on you if you attack one.

I know that 70k looks long but it goes pretty quick and once i hit 1h specialist i can solo alot tougher stuff also you might want to get a better weapon i don't what you have but that makes a big big difference

Going though the 70k to get to 1H IV and the 125k to get though Novice Fencer, I spent most of my time on Ikopi and Nightspiders (on Naboo and Rori) Each gave about 110 XP, and I could clear out a nest of them fairly quickly. My best times were when I was was able to bounce between 3 lairs of Nightspiders and/or Ikopi. I could just go from lair to lair almost non stop. Maybe pitch a camp once a rotation and wait about 6 minutes to top off again.

When I got to 1H IV, my best camp was some Veermock Sentries. They con'ed white and would group aggro, but they easily fell with 2 or 3 spin shots.

You best bet is to find a Medic/Marksman. (and make sure at least one of you can build camps) You go up and brawl while the Medic hangs back a bit shooting, and stiming you from time to time. I would stay away from larger hunting groups till you get Novice Fencer.

yeah. i was talking to maxamus earlier, and he asked me my weapon stats (sliced ryyk, 61-153 @ 2.6) and he was apalled that i was using such a weak weapon. which i found to be surprising, as i had thought it was decent.

sadly, dominous (the big melee weaponsmith on tat) doesn't have any curveds, so i'm stuck with it for a while.

i've fought scyks a few times, but as they'd usually leave me with 25% health after one, i figured they weren't as efficient for xp. maybe when i get a better weapon i'll give them another go.

You should join my network of Fencers on Eclipse, there's no obligation, I'm basically sharing information and names of fellow fencers through email contact so we can pool vender knowledge and training...there are actually other shops out there than just Dominous who sell a good curved 1h swordand with like stats.

I agree with Darth*. A probot will help alot. That's around the time I got mine. XP came very quickly.

I also went to a few different planets. Time and XP went by faster while exploring and fighting new and different creatures.
