Thread: Back to playing fencer, after testing swordsman

So, Ive played fencer and swordsman up through novice.

I must say, swordsman IS nice. Here are a few things I noticed about 2hand: (assuming you find good weapons)

2hand swords can be pretty fast (with slicing) at about 2.4-2.6 speeds (faster thansome 1hand weapons)

2hand weapons have base damages well over 200.

2hand weapons seemingly hit for twice as much damage with an average attack (compared to 1hand)

2hand weapons seem to kill faster in 1 vs 1 combat. How? Each ham pool needs less totalhits to drop to zero. (this is using normal attacks only)

Sounds pretty good doesnt it? So why did I switch back to Fencer?

Style points baby! heheh nah. Here is why:

1hand CAN be a good deal faster if you get a REALLY good weapon made and slicer. Up to about 1.8 for something like a curved blade

1hand Special attacks. This is where its at. Especially the combination of Dizzy and Posture Change attacks. 2hand doesnt have this ability. 2hand has several posture change attacks, but no dizzy, nothing that would actually knock down an opponent. This makes a WORLD of difference when fighting things one on one. It allows the fencer to take on challenges much harder than a swordsman could, simply because a fencer can avoid damage by crippling the enemies ability to fight back.

1hand causes less aggro. I seemingly get less agro with 1 hand, due to less damage. With 2hand, id get agro almost every time with just the first hit

1hand HAM drain is quite a bit less. WHile you wont want to do specials with every attack (egads, you'd kill yourself) you can bust out a few more than you could with 2hand.

1hand XP earned in groups is easier than 2hand. Because 2hand is slower, you often time dont get a chance to hit more than once or twice in group combat. Whats this mean? Very little xp for you. With 1hand, you are going to hit quite a bit more often and net more damage over time. If you miss with 1hand, its not nearly as drastic as missing with a slower 2hand attack.

So there you have it, my personal experience and thoughts on the matter. Fencer is unique, and isnt for everyone. Having tried both ends of the spectrum, its the right choice for me however. Hope some of this info is useful to others.

Ryyk Blade (minimum 18k)
Wound Chance: 39.57
Ideal/Max Range: 3/4
Range Mods: -8/-8/-8
HAM Cost: 56/45/40

22. 71-169 / 1.8

this is a one handed for sell on my server so i am with fencer all the way...i would like to compare dpm with this and a 2h weapon i think it would be close.

2hand seems to get some "unspoken" mutliplier to damage.

In testing, I had a 186 dmg 1hand curved sword, vs a 238 dmg 2hand curved sword.

My 1hand sword hit consistantly (normal attacks, no skills) for roughly 180-200 damage.

My 2hand sword hit consistantly (normal attack, no skills) for rougly 300-400 damage.

So while the 2hand sword was a bit slower, its damage by far made up for it.

Which was fine for little things, but against yellow/red con things, it wasnt enough, the skills are what mattered.

Rykk blades arent to my liking because they have high all around HAM drain for EVERY stat. Curved blades have a high action (which most fencers have a good deal of) and moderate Mind drain (not bad considering I have 800 mind, 450 focus and 700 willpower)

Take a look at D'Toxs guide to Melee Weapons. 2H Swords have AP ratings of 1 (and 2 for the Power Hammer) where as 1H swords are 0 (except for the Vibro). That is most likely where you "unspoken" multiplier is coming from.

2-h curved swords should have 0 AR according to the stragegy guide numbers..

Testing over on the swordsman board has shown that theymost likely have AR 2 at the moment.

Well I'm a swordsman and in groups I've found I get more xp than the others becuase we can do alot of damage in one or two shots. I played as a fencer in beta and now after going swordsman I'm staying 2h even though most of our weapons aren't swords.....

oh and the 2h curved swrods is AR 2. On our boards we've done the math and yep it's a AR2. I wish our Power Hammer was as good as your stun batton.
