Thread: This has probably been speculated already... are lightsabers one-handed or two?

Just curious. I'm trying to emulate Darth Maul's character, and wondered if 1-handed or 2-handed would be more appropriate for his lightsaber combat ~J

I don't know that there is a direct answer to this question, but I am fairly sure there will be both 1hand and 2hand sabers. Most of the saber play you see in SW is of the 2hand variety but there are many instances of 1hand techniques and sabers being used.

Your question seems to lead more to pikemen than to fencers or swordsman. Pikemen, I believe, canuse staves which would be the closest equivalent to the double-bladed saber that Darth Maul used.

Well, in the strategy guide, the light-sabres are two handed...but I'm sure there are going to be one-handed light-sabres

There's a movie in there somewhere, check it out. It's pretty neat.

Remember: Count Dooku was a fencer...

Over the next few days, we're going to be implementing a new system: forum rating balancing. We are aware that stars 1 and 5 have been overused by players, while stars 2-4 have shown little use at all. Our new plan calls for the gradual yet systematical nerfing of stars 1 and 5, resulting in an even playing field for our forum-goers. Thank you.

I would bet that they come out with a Light and Heavy Lightsaber; one-handed and two-handed, respectively.

Darth Maul's would definitely be a two-handed version.

It does come down to how they will define what makes 1h/2h/polarm

To me atleast.

1H = a weapon that can efectively be wielded in a single hand leaving the other hand available for balance, or holding other items. This does not preclude a move or style where both hands are on a weapon, second hand used for balance etc. Style is usually based upon use of quick moves, constatntly changing attack patterns and looking for weak spots to accurately attack, opponents attacks are parried and redirected rather than blocked with force.i.e. Sabre, Sword, Katana(1 handed, often used 2h for balance), foil, baton, chair leg, knife, dagger

2H = a weapon whose weight or style requires use of both hands to effectively wield in combat and whose. Does not preclude some moves or styles with weapn that only uses one hand at times. Style usually based upon powerful moves that press and attack through an opponets defensesusing the weapons weight and reach toblock forcably any incoming attack.i.e. No-Dachi, Axe, Heavy Mace, War hammer.

Polearm = a weapon whose length requires the use of two hands to effectively wield in combat. Style is to use the weapons extra reach to keep an opponet away and be able to attack multiple areas of an opponent easily. Most weapons reversible and have a second attack using their haft end. I.e. spear, staff, halberd

so taking above into account I would say that most light-sabre's seen in SW where really 1handed. The second hand on the hilt for balance and parry strengthnot power attack. Also don't want the second hand flailing around getting lopped off. The techniques used with the light-sabre was based around speed, quick movement and redirection of attacks rather than powerful attacks to smash through defencesand heavy blocks. Some instances of power blocks and attacks where used but generally whencombatant was angry or other emotion was used evident.

Darth Mauls sabre was a 3 level weapon in my opinion. At first with only a single blade ignited he use it with alot of power using its reach and was very 2h style. With both blades ignited it became the polearm obviously but when severed he reverted to a 1h style of quick movement etc.

So to imitate Maul it would require all three disciplines .

Hope that makes sense and is just my opinion. Apologies for any spelling mistakes.

To be honest I dont think there IS a style for a lightsaber... it would seem to be a highly adaptable weapon. You could use it easily with one hand because it would be nearly weightless and you dont have to worry about not swinging hard enough to do damage because the blade doesn't really cut.. but more along the line of melts anything that comes into contact with it. If you really want to see the answer plug in the Empire Strikes Back and watch Vader and Luke fight in the carbon freezing room. The majority of the fight vader is using one hand in a traditional fencer style, but about halfway through the fight changes his stance to the two handed method.

Personally I think its more of an offensive defensive posture.. you could definately react faster using a single hand, but on a full out attack two handswould behighly adaptable.. expecially after you take out the weight out of the equation.

IMHO, a lot of people get confused between style and design when looking at 1h v 2h.

1h and 2h isn't how many hands are holding onto the weapn but what it has been designed to be used effectively with. To use a ranged anaology, if a pistol is on-handed and a rifle requires two hands, if you use a weaver stance ona pistol is it now a rifle ?

As stated above the Lightsaber is a light very adaptable weapon, more in the 1h profession by design, but occasionally held in 2h.

Lightsabers are two handed weapons. A phase blade is a one handed weapon wich is pretty much a shorter lightsaber. But if your going for the darth maul look his weapon is like a staff so i would go with pikeman.

Clearly, a lightsaber can be used either one-handed or two-handed. It's just a hilt - the blade is massless and directionless (i.e., it's is a blade no matter which way it's rotated). The blade cuts effortlessly, requring no significant force in the swing to cause damage (unless it encounters another lightsaber in the path, of course). It pierces and slashes equally well. As such, the weapon itself has no preference for one-hand or two-hand use.

It then falls to the wielder to decide which way to use it. Most of the saber-play seen in the movies involves 2-handed use, but not all. It would appear most jedi were proficient in wielding the blade either way, using whichever method had the most advantages at the time.

I would say darth maul was a pikeman. the double bladed LS was an awful lot like polearm/quarterstaff type fighting.

1h = 1 hand. 2h = 2 hands.

So, 1h and 2h do refer to how many hands are holding onto the weapon. While yes, there are many instances that people use lightsabers in differing forms, the main one everyone seem to use is 2-handed. In the case of Darth Maul, he did use two of the forms, pikeman and swordsman, I didn't remember him using a fencing style at all. Dooku did use a fencing style for most of fights, this would probably be because of the shape of his lightsaber.
