Personally I like the scatter type hits in pve also. When fighting in a group or against a killstealer scatterhits are an excellent way to get the most damage done at once since it has a chance to do good damage among all three ham bars. The downside though in pve if you need to get the critter down fast its better using an attack that targets one ham pool since it will get the npc down quicker.
