Now this is a loaded question. I mean I hear this term "support profession" get tossed about alot. And I mean ALOT. Soo who are we supporting? The team? Doesn't that make everyone a "support profession"? Where are we supporting? How many places can you name where you need more than just a person with novice medic to get by?
How are we supporting? Our dodge is great in low and mid level content...but against high level content toughness and mitigation are all that matters. It must be our high damage output....wait. Nevermind.
No sadly I see us as more of a neglected profession instead of a heavy "support" profession as you term it. When they lower the accuracy on npc's at places like the vette or DWB where are defense would come in handy then maybe we could really be good tanks. Otherwise I'd rather a TK be the meatshield.

I don't believe any combat profession should be a support profession.
Doc/CM are support professions.
Anyways I think that once they fix the speed formulas etc. That we'll see more balance.
Fencers should hit very fast for medium-low damage
Pikeman should hit slow for very large damage
Facing a 10k ham NPC a truly balanced system would have all elite combat professions with the same amount of skill points invested kill it at the same time.
A fencer might hit it for 1k each time and bring it down in 10 hits
A pikeman would hit it for 3.3k each time and bring it down in 3 hits
Still i'd take about the same amount of time. Perfect balance is indeed impossible, but some roles should be defined.

Alright, when I say support I'm talking about our ability to stay alive.
This quality alone makes very valuable in group efforts. Dodge and stun damage are our bread and butter. With the state of armor and psg's we can contribute, but our inability to target mind exclusively makes it impossible for fencers to kill a prepared opponent.
Look folks, I have been fighting pvp battles for the past 5 months. I still fight, and I still roam around solo. Reason being, probably only 1/3 of the players have the right gear to defend against us and I still win much more than I lose... However without dots, we can't kill jack.
Now realize I don't personally have master brawler. I know knockdown would go a long way against opponents. I have to play my fencer like a ranged player. Stick a dizzy, step off a few steps and go for the posture change hoping the dizzy will make em fall down. This process can be fairly time consuming and with some of these folks, even on their back, scatterhit doesn't take their mind down fast enough. All we can hope for is targeting health and hope they can't get up to heal in time. The power of a good Stim B is enough to make our targeted health shots worthless one on one.
I have recently taken on 8 to 12 players and won, but we're talking about folks who are new to pvp using turrets and cloners as their only salvation.
I've been beaten by master dancers with TKA skills simply because of knockdown dizzy. If I truly believed I could last as long in battles I'd have swapped back to tka by now, but in my eyes, if I assist in killing 4 or 5 players rather than being able to solo one, I'm of more value.
PVE wise, I won't comment as I haven't killed critters since I worked the profession to master.
Anyone disagree with what I've said?

I'll get around posting my reasons now. Just wanted to hear what you folks had to say on the matter.

I believe that our originial concept was of a "support" type profession, before theMelee professions were given the role of tanks anyway.
I could be wrong, but I believe the only other Profession to have our status changing attacksat the time were the TKA
I remember grouping with my pikeman friends, I would set them up, and they would knock them down. (Fort Tusken example)
Im really interested to see if that is the vision that the Dev team have for us in GCW (Combat revamp).

Well first define "support"
In PvP fencer is not support for god's sake! Let the geo's do that. I think the marksmen are the most important support prof for pvp cuz if u get some fencers/tkms up there distracting them while u shoot at there mind , then thats a pretty good plan

i fight with mrsemi alot...and i am a master fencer/master rifleman. for me, fencer is a total support profession. i can take 2 times the hits from jedi. when i want to run away from a bad situation, i switch to my gaffi stick and that gives me good defenses. but i never ever use it for damage. (which is what i believe a non-support profession is)
When i have a fencer in my group, i just lay low for a bit and let them take the heat at the beginning of the battle and then i smoke them while they are engaged with the fencer.
so i agree.

as it is atm in a group vs group situation, you being fencer, means being in the front line trying to land dizzy and posture change on as many targets as possible and let the damage dealers finish them off. so seeing that i would say it is more of a support than anything else, if you define support as in "not doing the damage just helping your team to win".

Does depend who you are fighting... Ioften get upset how little damage we can do to some people. Which is why we can be considered a support profession. We can help our group stay alive by having the enemy attack us and have us dodge and soak up all the damage. We can also use a really fast acklay baton, use ScatterHit2 and eat through their synth steak and PSG's making the rest of our group be able to do the real damage.
I really wish we get an AP2 weapon sometime soon...

im allways the guy who is overt ... and "tanking" while the ranged ppl tef off me .. so guess "support" is the right word
that and forget about doing dmg when you run into someone with a 40% stun armor and a psg
(used to have mfencer tkm pistol1040)
