Thread: Does ranged damage mitigation currently work when you have a MELEE weapon equipped?

Someone told me they thought the fencer correspondent knew the answer to this, I'm also going to post it in the TKA forum because I'm having a hard time getting a definite answer.

Does ranged mitigation work when I have a melee weapon equipped, or does it only work when I have a ranged weapon equipped. I always thought it worked all the time but someone told me differently tonight.

To my knowledge, No.

Now there are a few exceptions I have not tested, and they are'

The Ranged mitigation gained by the Commando tree

The ranged mitigation gained by the Bounty Hunter (investigation) tree

Vice verse, melee mitigation with ranged weapons is the same deal, with one exception, Smugglers get melee and ranged mit1 (but no higher)

In a normal case of say, a Rifleman/TKM (typical fotm) they will get ranged mit with a rifle up, melee with the vk, never both.

I've been looking on FAQs in the various profession forums and can't seem to find the answer to this question. I'm not doubting the previous poster but I recall reading that mitigations work even if a weapon is not equipped (a ranged weapon for ranged mitigation, melee for melee mitigation).

Incorrect scott.

It is not always on, you cant, EVER have ranged and melee mit3.

The only time their BOTH on is in the case of smuggler, and unless its a bug, that is only mit 1 in both melee and ranged

It, just like the secondary defenses, are link'd to weapons.

I have sense my previous post, tested the BH and commando mitigations, they do not apply when a weapon is unequipt, even though unarmed is a requirement for commando.

So to answer the question, No, they are only on if you are using the weapon class that you got the mitigation in (A rifleman doesnt get mitigation defenses from, say tkm or fencer, if a rifle is on)

I would be interested in knowing this as well, seems to be two thoughts, yes always on or no only on with specific weapon. Since there is no profession associated with it, I will say that it matters little about the type of weapon (commando vs pistoleer), but anyone willing to test by taking a master range profession and attacking unarmed while a range profession fires on you would answer the question (the victim needs to be sure they have no melee mitigation, and post all there range defense modifiers). No armor would work best. Take 5 shots. Then post the results. I am at work so I can not test this.

Also, need a master range profession taht did not master another range profession. That way you can test if it is weapon specific.

I finally found a post about this, a Developer Q&A, in which the following was asked and answered:

1) Perrish asked: "Any word on whether mitigations from multiple professions will stack? If you're master carbineer and pistoleer, is there an advantage in mitigation?"

DEV RESPONSE: "The Ranged and Melee Mitigation levels do not stack. Two level ones does not equal level two. Only the highest one is in affect. Ranged and Melee Mitigation can both be in affect if you have both from different profession. They are not limited by weapon equiped."

Here's the link to the full Q&A:

Ranged and melee damage mitigation work at the same time!!!

I can confirm this myself too. The reason that you take less damage while holding a melee weapon is because of melee toughness.

My experience also shows thatyou benefit from the damage mitigation from ranged and melee at the same time. To the dev's discredit, they never figured out a way to limit these defense types due to the hybrid profs that they created such as smuggler and BH that have both. I should be able to post numbers tomorrow if we want to check out how the mitigation works.

I'll set up a test with a weapon and have a friend shoot me several times to see what damage sticks. I will have him attack both my toons, 1crafter with a no mitigation in either melee or ranged, and 1 toon with ranged and melee mitigation 3 with a pistol and with a sword. Both will have no weapons or armorequipped. You will find that the toon with no damage mitigation for either will take higher damage on both accounts due to the damage mitigation bonus.

You used to have both at the same time, but they patched it to correspond with what weapon you have out.

End of story.

Edit: And that thread you posted was from December 2003. It's changed since then.
