What does the skill do exactly? It says you can avoid attacks, but by how much?

+30 dodge = 30% chance to dodge any attack?

Also does anyone know about melee defense or ranged defense, how those work?

20 melee defense = 20% damage reduction?

15 ranged defense = 15% chance for the enemy to miss with a blaster?

just trying to find the formula's

Nope, that is not how it works. We all have an innate Dodge, Melee Defense, Range Defense, ect.. The mod modifies the percentage of those innate numbers that we have, which we don't know what they are. As a master fencer, I have noticed 0 difference with melee defense, range and dodge. The only thing noticeable is the melee toughness. It's very dissapointing. I think the reason it makes no big difference is because the number that the mod is supposed to modify is too low. They need to make +30 dodge = 30% of dodging an attack. I can't remember the last time that I dodged an attack and I look at my combat window a lot.

Because of the 75% damage reduction the fights last longer.
I went against another swordsman and I dodged two of his attacks.
Is it possible that this is a Melee only Dodge move?

Naw, I've dodged ranged attacks in the past. Hell, dodged one today, it just doesn't come up that often.

'Scuse me for resurrecting this thread, but I was wondering about this issue myself, and the thread came up in a search.

I just took my dodge from +15 to +30, and I have noticed that I'm dodging more. At least I'm dodging melee attacks more . . . at any rate, I too am curious about what the modifier means.

dodge was broken when this thread was active.... you have noticed an increase because its fixed now

No, I'm pretty sure the increase was because I took the modifier up 15--just judging from how many times I dodged in several hours' fighting before upping the modifier to +30 compared to how many times I dodged afterwards.

before the last big patch dodge was basicly almost useless... your increase was due to your skill... but before at that skill you would never have dodged a shot. sorry if i didnt make myself clear. i tend to stream thoughts together and they get misenterpreted alot.

Dodge was both too low AND broken when this thread was originally active. Since then it has both been fixed, AND beefed up (in more ways than one).

Gotcha--thanks! But as yet there's no solid understanding of what the numbers mean? Or rather, how they relate to one's . . . let's say, percentage change to dodge a given attack?

There is a solid understanding... I'm just limited as to how much I can get done in a day. It's in the hopper though.

Heh. Gotcha. Thanks for all your work.

Man, this is weird . . . Fencer is, like, a viable profession now. When I left in early September, it was something you did if you didn't actually care about being any good--a style thing.
