First, I hope you approach dancing with the same dedication you would with scouting or creature handling -- by that, I mean it shouldn't be just a skill to pick up because you think you can macro your way up without working at it
Having said that, the best pointers I can give you so that you get the maximum satisfaction and enjoyment from dancing:
1. Always be at the keyboard. Always welcome/greet patrons who come into the cantina. You don't have to flirt or wink suggestively, but you should at least be friendly and engaging.
2. Don't spam for tips. You'll get plenty of tips if you do #1.
3. You have 2 basic varieties of Experience: Dancing and Entertainment Healing. You get more Dancing XP being in larger groups (always group!), and you get more Entertainment Healing, the more patrons who are /watching you. (Again, see #1)
4. I suggest starting in a pretty busy city at first to make sure you have groups to join for Dancing XP, and enough patrons to get Ent Heal and tips. On my server those spots would be Mos Eisley or Coronet. Your mileage may vary.
5. Always /listen to the band so you know what music they're playing. Sure, it will get annoying at first when you're hanging with newbie musicians, but by the time you're a full-fledged Dancer they will be playing some serious music. Vary your dance according to the music being played.
6. Use flourishes judiciously - they give you a very slight bump in dance XP, but their main purpose is to put some variety in your movements so you hold attention longer. Special effects are also huge drains on your Action pool and should be used sparingly.
7. Make use of the /changedance command to move seamlessly between your dance variations. This is especially nice when you get to Master and have 4 versions of Exotic.
8. You do NOT have to go 'Ho' to do well as a dancer. Some like to engage in cyber, but that doesn't mean it's a requirement. Listen to your own conscience, be considerate of your fellow dancers and you'll have more fun than you thought possible.
9. Turn off your XP bar. It's a proven fact that watched XP bars move at 1/10th the rate of those not watched
10. Post on the Dancer profession board, it's a great gang over there!

Which parts confused you? Feel free to ask here or over in the Dancer forum. Not everybody is as wordy and obtuse as I am
