Thread: Dance and Music Professions Too Rigid?

Does anyone else find that Musician and Dancer Professions are too rigid? You get x ranks, you achieve the following dances, or this set of musical instruments. Sorry, buddy. You've only taken music classes for a few months? Your only choice of instrument to play is the bassoon. You want to play guitar? Nice try--that's a 7th year instrument.

Wouldn't it be better if the songs/instruments or dances you knew were granted to you as a pool--the way a merchant is granted additional vendors. But unlike a merchant who places that number of vendors, we musicians and dancers can go to our trainers or to player teachers and learn whichever instrument/song/dance we'd like. Maybe some of the really tough ones require more than one slot--so you'd need to earn several instrument slots to be able to learn that final instrument (which I can never spell).

You'd still need to get full mastery in order to learn ALL the songs, ALL the instruments, ALL the dances. But it would allow every fledgling musician and dancer to be more unique.

Thoughts?

And something else that seems off to me--you have to earn Master Entertainer to be able to play the Mandoviol?

Thank God real life doesn't require you to learn how to style hair and dance before you can play guitar--there'd be two whole bands in the history of music.

Likewise, you aren't required to advance in rifle and carbine just to get access to a special pistol. You aren't even required to get Master Pistoleer to get the last pistol. But you are for Musician, Dancer, heck, even Chefs have that issue.

see, I think the difference is that a special pistol move and stat bonuses etc. are enough for people to master pistoleer. Versus master entertainer which has essentially no draw for anyone if you strip away mando and the two dances.

I agree with the suggestion made on an earlier thread to put all the lighting effects into master entertainer. all the effects. Lighting effects are not and should not be for amatures, and musicians who are "purely" musical (whatever that is) don't have any need for that. Entertainers who spend their life on stage should be receiving the lighting craft, set design, sound level mixing, things of that nature that a musician has only passing knowlege of.

There are many other threads on this topic, however, and I havn't read them all. I'm sure there are some great suggestions in them.

See, THAT makes sense to me--putting the lighting effects in Master.

I agree with you that what probably happened is they didn't see enough draw to getting Master without putting instruments/songs/dances in them, but to my mind that roughly translates into, "how do we FORCE people to get to titles we haven't flushed out enough to make worthwhile otherwise?" which smacks of hasty design.

PLEASE no more mandoviol threads... there are still some active ones even hehe.

As far as the song idea, I think it makes sense that the better songs are higher, that's pretty true to how things would work with a real musician yes? You aren't going to be able to play a rachmaninov piano concerto right after finishing your level I piano books, no matter how sick of chopsticks and playing scales you are.
