Thread: Bowie planning Star Wars Galaxies gig? April Fools Joke??
It doesn't seemlike a joke, but it is strange that there are many previously unannounced enhancements listed in the article for entertainers.
From the article:
"We're aware that many of the dancers and musicians doing their thing in Star Wars Galaxies' cantinas do so using lengthy macros that don't actually require the players to be at their keyboards," we were told by an SOE spokesperson, who refused to comment on the subject of Bowie's appearance in the game. "This has resulted in the cantinas of most major cities filling with AFK (away from keyboard) players for 24 hours a day, which is something we never envisaged happening nor condone."
"In order to facilitate the entertainer profession changes, which are currently scheduled to go live in September or early October, the cantinas themselves will be undergoing something of a face-lift. Entertainers will only be able to perform in a cantina if they qualify to appear on the new stages and podiums, and in order to qualify, players will not only need to have reached a certain skill level but will also have earned themselves a number of 'entertainer points' by performing entertainer missions. The points will work in much the same way as the Rebel and Imperial faction points already present in the game and can be spent on 15-minute stage and podium time slots by players looking to perform in front of an audience."
I'll believe it when I see it. Maybe not even then.

Bowie planning Star Wars Galaxies gig?
SOE planning major revamps for entertainer professions in Star Wars Galaxies, including a special appearance by David Bowie.
See it » After spotting a recent and hurriedly removed item on the official David Bowie Web site concerning a Star Wars Galaxies concert, GameSpot has learned that Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) is planning a major reworking of the entertainer professions and cantinas in its George Lucas-inspired massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The post, which we're not in a position to quote, mentioned that Bowie (who is no stranger to music in video games) will be the first artist to perform an original track in the Star Wars Galaxies universe. Bowie will reportedly be appearing for one night only at an undisclosed venue on each server. Apparently, a set number of master entertainers who are the first to choose to listen to him perform--and do so for the duration of his specially-composed track--will be rewarded with the ability to perform or dance along with the track.
The real news for players, though, is that the entertainer professions are to get a much-needed revamp. Many of the professions in the popular massively multiplayer role-playing game have been altered in some way since its launch last year, but while changes to the combat professions focus primarily on solving player-versus-player balancing issues, revamps to other roles in the game, such as the recently revamped chef, are designed to make them more interesting for the players who are pursuing them.

In addition to limiting the number of entertainers performing in a cantina simultaneously, it's hoped that the entertainer revamp will encourage dancers and musicians to perform in cantinas all over the galaxy rather than congregating in large numbers in the major cities. Stage and podium time--in small and player-created city cantinas, open air theaters, and more--will be available to entertainers of lower skill and at much lower prices than for those in prestigious capital city cantinas, such as those in Coronet and Theed.
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the entertainer revamp, though, is that SOE will be actively encouraging entertainers to form bands that travel around the galaxy and play at organized concerts. Master musicians and dancers who are grouped together will be capable of giving players mind buffs that are far superior to anything currently available in the game. Furthermore, musicians and dancers will have the option to charge for their services by having those interested players pay a fee if they are able to listen to the musical offerings rather than having to rely on player generosity afterwards, as is currently the case.
We'll bring you more information on SOE's ongoing plans for Star Wars Galaxies, which include a space expansion pack, as soon as it becomes available

Though I must admit.... I actually kind of like some of the ideas in there. Probably why it was such a good joke, is that it was well written and thought out and had stuff that really would be a nice addition.
