Hi
Well, there is a lot of debate about this, but from what I have experienced myself, it is the instrument that determines the xp....the song doesn't seem to affect it.

can anybody confirm that the song does not affect xp if you are playing the highest lvl instrument u are able to play? ie: omnibox with starwars1 = omnibox with starwars3?

Yeah, all you need to do is use your highest level instrument you know how to play.
This is done to not penalize musicians who join a group to play with new folks - i.e. Ommni box playing SW1 is the same xp as Ommni box playing Ballad, or Waltz, or whatever.
Just use your highest level instrument once you gain a new skill, and you'll be getting the best xp you can get.

when i did entertainer and musician, i actually tested this out. now i cant remember exactly which songs/instruments i used...but i noticed when i used the highest instrument i could use in conjunction with the higest song i could play, i got the most yielded exp....people always told me it had nothing to do with the song...but when i was playing (as musician with all posible songs/instruments other than master), when i used my highest instrumnet with the band song i would get about 20-30 exp less per flourish than when i left group played my top song with my top instruments...so generally i played the higest song...so i generally would start playing the song i wanted and then joined the group...

Hehe seems like you're getting a lot of differing "facts" based on experience here.
So I'll chime in with my own findings while I was still working up the Entertainer and Music trees. Xp was highest when I was either playing my highest song or playing my highest instrument. (In other words if I were at 0040 music, I would get as much xp playing Jazz on the Slitherhorn as I got playing Starwars1 on the Ommni Box) Of course, there are times when your instrument might be higher-level than your highest song and when your song may be higher than your best intsrument. Then you'll just have to balance it out as much as you can if you're playing with others.

heheh I answered this and then looked over on the music boards and someone has asked the same question there. The answers confirm what I wrote above although Tiaga's post is probably a little more clear about it.

My experience matches Tralmek's here.
It's the "best of two variables" that determines xp, song or instrument.

If you always use your best instrument then the appearance will be that the song doesn't matter. Music and instruments from the same level grant the same xp. However, they do not add, meaning only one of them is used; whichever is highest. So Omni Box on SW1 gets the same xp as Slitherhorn on Jazz. Or really, Omni Box on anything but Virtuoso gets the same xp as anything but Nalargon on Jazz.
The same is true of action spent.
