If you're wanting to become a musician for the music (i.e. you enjoy listening to the music and your goal isn't to just buff people with your speakers off), then you'll almost certainly want to be able to play the mandoviol, regarded by many (myself included) as the best instrument currently in the game.
You get the mandoviol at Master Entertainer, not anywhere in the Musician profession skillset. Thus, you will need to level up on dancing and image design.
Dancing isn't too big a deal, you get to hang out with the same people in the same places as when you're playing your music.
However, ID can be a pain, with the timers restricting how quickly you can level in it. Start levelling in ID as soon as possible! Any spare moment you have, just do a /image self, change your hairstyle, and hit the alt key to get the ID window off your screen. Check back in a couple minutes, commit the change, and repeat. Perfect times to do this are when you run out of action while playing/dancing (if you are non-human-stat-migrated, or without accaragm or buff); when you're waiting for a shuttle; when you're shopping on the bazaar. Really, anytime you have a moment, start an ID session. It'll go more quickly than you think, since you aren't sitting there grinding it non-stop, and when you do go to grind the rest of it to get to Master Entertainer, you'll have very little left to do.
Just to help you get that awesome instrument as soon as possible
.
Disclaimer: This is not a guide for the quickest way to ID xp. There are other guides to help with that
. This is just a way of taking care of some of it as you go along.

Heh, might want to mention how being in an ID Tent cuts the timer in half for those people who don't mind sitting there and grinding.
Nice suggestions by the way.

The ID grind to master Entertainer is not that bad, and once you can change eye colour it goes really fast.

Well, it wasn't meant to be a general guide to getting ID xp, so I'll go ahead and put a disclaimer of such in the original post. Thanks!

One thing that really speeds it up.. You can be waiting on the timer for yourself while doing other things...
Like playing music, or dancing.

My friend and I are going to master entertainer (for Mandoviol-related fun), and they got to the end of Music 4 much before I did, without playing a single note...just by crafting instruments...
This doesn't seem right...

Another thing that I've found:
Although you can't start an ID session or commit one while skill animating, you can runthe timer down.
So you can start the timer, play/dance for a few minutes (or until you run out of action), stop, and then apply the change.
This also works with anything else that might not allow you to start a session, such as riding a mount/vehicle. Riding out to the store just outside Coronet? Start the timer and then apply it when you get there (after dismounting).

It is possible to get all your musician xp without playing a single note, yes. Once you get to technique IV, the xp flies by as you make nalargons. I'll usually skip to musician I by making slitherhorns so I don't have to play sw1 on one.
I like sw1, just not on a slitherhorns. The rest is mostly a waste of resources. Healing xp still gates you from both novice and master.
When I was doing ID and dancing at the same time, I found that finished the dancing, healing and ID skills in entertainer all about the same time. I already had musician IV at that point.
