Thread: Clear the Doorways: Cantinas

Why is it that you walk into cantinas now and the entertainment is right in the doorway? I find this a little goofy. Why don't they create stages inside the cantina where you will only gain xp if you are playing/dancing there?

Q.: Why is it that you walk into cantinas now and the entertainment is right in the doorway?

A.: I can only assume this is a product of afkers and buffbots. The only place I have seen this occuring is at the Coronet cantina on my server, which is quite crowded with AFK entertainment and buffbots.

Q.: Why don't they create stages inside the cantina where you will only gain xp if you are playing/dancing there?

A.: This would be a dangerous move. Shrinking the amount of entertainment space down from the entire cantina to a small section of a cantina would get messy. Soon You have dancers merging through each other and AFKers hogging all the real estate. Not pretty.

There is alot of room in cantinas thatdoesn't get used. I don't think overcrowding would be a problem. There could be several stages spread out within the entire cantina.

Hear hear!
I can assure you it's not only a result of buffbots (or necessarily afk players). The first time I noticed people in the doorway in our Theed cantina, they were fairly well known dancers, and atk.
I've been trying lately to clear them out by calling them fire hazards. I usually get a laugh or two, but no movement. Hmpf.
I'll keep playing my music for table #6, for whenever patrons of the cantina decide to sit there.

Nah, I think it was more of a "Lemming Effect" with the buffbots as the leaders.

Buffbots went to the front so they could be better noticed. Stand out from the crowd of non-buffbots. Also, all the adventurers come in at the front, so it was more convenient (and less lag-inducing) to set up there.

Then the hologrinders took notice. The #1 thing on their mind is XP. If all the adventurers are up front getting buffs, guess where the XP is. Thus they moved up their to get much-desired Entertainer Healing XP.

New grinders would come and see these hologrinders up front and hear stories of how quickly they burned through Dancer or Musician. Thus they would set up there in the hopes they too will grind quickly through it.

Now with a bunch of people up front it's just become a custom, like how docs set up buff lines in front of the star ports. So then everyone does it.

Well, in many cases, the lemming effect may be the cause, but I forgot to mention in my first post that we haven't had a buffbot in our Theed cantina (we did have a brief appearance by one but it was in the back and we ran it out after a few nights). So it's not just the lemming effect .

All it has to do is start in one very public cantina for it to spread to others. Heck, it could even spread to other servers (which might've been the case in some cases).

Unfortunately, Coronet is as public as it gets and I'm convinced that's where it started.

Then the tendrils reached out to Theed.

Luckily for we entertainers on Naritus, Theed has almost been abandoned by AFKers. There's one buffbot up at the very front, but the other night, we had a full live grinding group going. There's a sight you don't see every day.

Have whoever your leader is run a macro that invites the buff bot toyour group once a second, have them run this macro till the buff bot adds them to ignore. Then give leader to somebody else and have them run that macro, repeat until the buff bot has everybody in the cantina on ignore, then have friends do it for you afk until the buff bot gets frustrated after days of making no money and leaves (its what we do, it works, if they want to call it griefing I'll tell the CSR's that I find thier spam and them being AFK stealing our customers is griefing of us)

I'll come right out and say that I will actually not blame this particular phenomenon on buffbots.

Entertainers, just like any profession, have many people who want the biggest advantage possible. By standing in the door, they feel, and oftentimes rightfully so, that they are more likely to get the most healing experience or the most customers to buff. People always tend to take the shortest and quickest route possible with no consideration for lag, aesthetics, or atmosphere.

This past week, the Coronet buffbot on my server has been on vacation. I've been trying to take advantage of this by going into the Coronet Cantina and selling mindbuffs. I think it was Monday night, I was competing with 3 other master dancers (all probably who went back to Coronet with the same idea I had). It seemed like business was being split up rather fairly. However, there was one particular dancer who was much more aggressive than myself and the other dancer. That's all well and good. I mean, she's there, live, competing. But, of course, at some point during the evening she realized, "Hey, I will get the *most* customers if I go stand right there in the doorway!" So, that is what she did. And, as expected, she did receive the most customers.

Personally, I find hogging the door and being ruthless about getting *all* of the customers to be somewhat rude and tacky. I actually ended up leaving because I refuse to do that myself. Again, it's all fair, I suppose. But, my point is that this is something that some people just feel like they need to do to maximize the benefit of game mechanics. It's exactly why I don't support mind buffing and healing in starports, because I know everybody would go there and deal with the spam and the annoyance just to maximize their benefits. And, if I wanted to sell buffs, I could never effectively do so in a Cantina under that scenario. Right now, some of the more annoying members of our profession get as close to the front door as possible because that's the closest they can get to the starport. And, quite frankly, a lot of them are live performers. AFK'ers do it too, of course. But, I don't think this is something we can blame on afk play and buffbots.

I agree with Drygo, I don't think it's a by-product of buffbots. Buffbots just do it because the person that occassionally tends to themthinks the same way as the players that do it.It's all about an aggressiveadvantage pure and simple. Many players don't like going into the Cantina so if they can just poke their head in the door and get healed by somebody standing right there, they're happy.

The practice isabout as tacky as people dancing in their skivvies... well, okay... given the horrible clothes entertainers get to start with, I can sort of sympathise with a new player that dances in their skivvies.

I'm new to entertaining so take it for what its worth. I normally go to the back but the problem I have with the back room is space. People don't go use the chairs and tables but cluster in the only open area. This means that either the entertainers are dancing and playing in the middle of tables (not very immersive)or crushed right up front with the audience. If I'm gonna be crushed up with the audience then where I am becomes moot. I wish the cantinas were better laid out with the side rooms empty and set up as functional stage areas.

Getting in the entry foyer is something I didn't see starting to happen until hologrinding got into full swing. They did it so that people coming in just to get their fatigue and wounds fixed would see them first and stop. Now it's just something people do. I have always preferred going into one of the alcoves, or the corner to the right of the stairs as you come in. But I appear to be in the minority.

I refuse to give anyone in that front room one tick of entertainer healing xp or 1 credit of my money, simply because of the lag they all cause. The doorway people are especially annoying. What Entertainer stands in the doorway to "block" a patron from entering the bar area?

Most notably, Coronet is horrible for the front room thing.

I don't like running into a place, and the moment I step through the door I have 25 people in a mass AFK'ing. It does nothing but annoy me upon my first step into the place. What funny is that no one will respond to a thing you say, until of course, you say something about them getting the heck out of that front room. Then they sure perk right up and start cursing me out!

In my opinion, real entertainers play in front of the bar, or sometimes in the siderooms. I like finding my own little corner of the cantina, having a musician playing away or dancing doing a jig, and having a conversation while avoiding bubbles from people emoting random things that they think is funny.

The spontaneous little side room groups that form are great, and it's a very mellow atmosphere compared to just 40m away.
