I can't make all the instruments I can use, so was thinking of buying them. But do they affect the sound only or do they also affect the xp you get, like which song you play would. If so, would the quality of the instrument be an issue?
There's no real Entertainer FAQ post like in other professions. I saw the one with all the links, but didn't see one titled that sounded like it would answer this question.

Unfortunately, instrument quality (and instrument assembly skill tapes) do absolutely nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. Nilch.
A 1% quality horn that's cracked, bent, glued, duct taped, twisted, missing keys/valves, smells like a sewer, leaves a bad taste in your mouth, and blasts foul dust particles (we hope it's dust) into the air when you play it... will play just as elegantly/or badly as the finest Elosk Elite Instrument (blatant self pitch) made from the highest quality resources and Instrument Assembly skill tapes.

And to answer the main parts of your question... yes, the differentinstruments have different sounds... mostly. There are a few too many repeated sounds for the community's tastes, but there are different voicings throughout.
And yes, the instrument you play affects the XP you gain - the "higher" the instrument (the ones with higher skills required to be able to play), the greater the XP you get per tick. When you're leveling, always use the last instrument you'vequalified for to get the highest XP.

Note that if you are playing your highest song, instrument doesn't matter. (The exception being novice musician.) Typically when you're going for xp, however, you will not be playing your highest song.
