Entertainer Archive
Thread: Fame and fortune
To begin with, have a new option on the radial menu when someone targets an entertainer that says "Become a fan". People can only be a fan of a few entertainers at a time (or perhaps only one).
For starters, tie buffs and healing performance to fan base. The more fans an entertainer has, the better the buff and the faster the healing.
In the future, additional things could be added to people with appropriate fan support. The ability to list your actual name on the map as being in a particular cantina. Being able to promote tours in-game. Be able to send email to all your fans to inform them of performances and upcoming events. New titles. Visual indicators.
The entire idea is to reward those real entertainers who are able to work up a fan base with perks. This is a non-destructive way to reward ATK play as well. The first two suggestions shouldn't be all that hard to implement, especially if they only allow a person to be a fan of one entertainer at a time.
Anyway, just thinking out loud.

I wouldn't even bother with the AFK/ATK distinction. This is a way to recognize entertainers, period.
I would suggest a badge for someone who gets 50 fans, but I don't think that's a good idea. Some clan can pick their pet Entertainer. The badge won't be that special anymore.
Of course, I guess you can argue that ifwhole clans wants to give that recognition to an Entertainer, then maybe he does deserve it.
((I don't know about the best way to implement this, or the mechanics of it, but I just wanted to say: What a *fun* idea! My roleplay for my character is that she wants to be rich and famous, and maybe even a holovid star someday.
I really like this idea!))

I've got a little bit of a twist on the idea of fame, actually. I'll be tossing it out sometime soon.
No offence Pickles, but this will only mean that the AFK macro grinder with the biggest guild will be the one giving the best buffs.
It's an intriguing idea. I'm not about to give up on it just yet.
A real entertainer who is personable and entertains well has the opportunity with something like this to build up a very large fan base, over and above a bot.
But you're right, should the large guilds do things like madate that their members become fans of a particular entertainer, it could backfire a bit.

That way the only people the bot is helping is their own guild.
You may have to limit how often a person can switch entertainers to become a fan of in this case, since they'd want to switch to every entertainer they listen to.

I am a live entertainer. Always have been, always will be (unless I leave the profession). I also have a lot of fans, and didn't need an in-game feature to get them. I do not see the perk of having fans as having much to do with my in-game abilities at all. It is more a feature of my personality and my ability to be entertaining-not in the game-mechanics sense-but in the social sense. People know that the eight minute wait to get a buff from Sirii Ajaan is a lot morefun than getting a buff from the "next girl." However, if I am currently giving a buff, and someone needs a buff from a master dancer, then I don't want that person to have to wait until I'm done. After all, the "nextgirl" is my friend, and I don't want to have to take business from her.
With the buffing rules as they now stand, I am for the first time able to make a decent living inside the cantina. People pay big money for my buffs. They do it because, in many cases, I am the only one live and online. Right now, I average about 5000 credits a buff. With fame coming about as you suggest it, I see my income dropping down....a LOT. If you make buffs from an entertainer who you are a fan of SUPERIOR simply because you have committed yourself exclusively to them, you make the buffs from someone who works just as hard INFERIOR for reasons that have nothing to do with ATK, AFK, or ability as a conversationalist. Thus, the same buff from a Master that was considered before to be the best buff money can buy is no longer that, and my income suffers. Right now the system is this: Master A and Master B can give me the same buff. Who should I go to in order to get the buff? Master A, because that one can make me laugh. With fame, it will become this: Master A and Master B are both free and able to buff right now, but I am a fan of Master B, and can get a better buff from her, conversational skills notwithstanding.
Be honest. This fan system in essance has no mecanism in place to ensure that the best entertainers are the ones with the biggest fan base. We hope that it would, but just think of the ramifications:
"I would become a fan of yours, Sirii, because I've known you a long time, but my PA wants me to be a fan of our dancer."
or,
"I'd get a buff from you now, Sirii, but I can get a 25% better buff if our PA's dancer woud come back from AFK, so I'll wait for her."
or,
"I used to tip you 5000 credits, I know, but seeing as your buffs are not as good as our city's dancer, I'll pay you only 2000 credits."
or,
"Yes, I know you are free to give buffs right now, Sirii, but I'd rather wait eight minutes so I can get a 25% increase from our PA's dancer."
See what it is doing now? It is making my job MUCH harder from what it normally was, and for what? Because of this fame concept. I already have fans, from BOTH sides of the GCW and from a LOT of PAs. Why do I have to have bring this into the game mechanics? I get along quite well with my entertainment friends. Why do we have to create animosity amongst us to gain fans? I do well financially in the system as it stands, because I HAVE remained for the most part uncommitted to any specific group. Why do I have to be committed to an exclusive group just to practice my profession to its greatest potential? I could be the best conversationalist in the world, but that won't matter anymore. What matters will be the mere click on the radial menu, and that just makes conversation moot.
Therefore, I can say with all certainty that if this system were to go live, I wouldn't be able to practice my profession. You will have nerfed me from making a living as I once did. I am simply in no position to take advantage of it, since I have no PA, and do not live in a player city; and it will be THOSE features that will be important, not the art of conversation or the ability to provide a good, live show.
