I just posted this idea to In-Concept Open Discussion (Week Ending 2-16-04) and I would like to get your feedback, it's a long shot idea and likely would never happen. but! here it is

Since "Image Designers" are not really Entertainers, and there is a missing entertainer (Singer). How about replacing ID with "Singer" and making a new starting profession "Visual Artist".

Visual Artist - Like the other starting professions it should have 4 trees, Hairstyling Customization, Wildlife and landscape Studies, Painting, and Sculpting.

The advance professions that this new starting profession will lead to are;

  • Image Designer

  • Requirements: Visual Artist 4-0-0-0

  • Painter and/or Photographer

  • Requirements: Visual Artist 0-4-4-0

  • Sculptor

  • Requirements: Visual Artist 0-4-0-4

  • Taxidermist

  • Requirements: Visual Artist 0-4-0-0 and Scout 0-0-4-0

Even if it were unlikely to happen it's good for the devs to see us thinking out of the box Ask for a lot, so a little won't seem as much, that's my motto

I'm not sure how likely it is to happen, but that sounds like a pretty sweet idea…the problem as I see it, is moving the Image Design track out of entertainer—
any master enterainer is going to suddenly find themselves down 15 skill points when they lose the left-most track in entertainer (not to mention master) and gain a new starting profession.

P.S. I would think the Singer's songs would be "The SIMs" style in that you could hear the words but really can't make them out. Also I would hope there would be a ( /sing text ) command that causes your text to flot above your head like notes do, but don't Spam the text box.

Sir_Voor -

This is a FANTASTIC idea. As a Musician, soon to be master, I would love to be able to sing. I'd be dropping skills left and right for this one.

Well, as I am considering ID as a secondary profession, I don't know that I'd like to see it dropped as a stand alone, however, that being said - my character became a dancer because there wasn't a singer profession. I would definitely like to see (or rather hear!) this profession get off the idea ground floor!

Singing is easy. I tour all the time as a "singer." Just type in the lyrics and put /sing by them. I've made whole songs this way, like "The Bounty Hunter from Bela Vistal" (played to SW3), or "My Fish-Eyed Fool" about a mon-calamari boyfriend.

Yes, but this would take the prof of singer a few steps further. To be honest, I have found the unsolicited "singing" of people in the cantina to be annoying at times. It can almost be as bad as spam sometimes. However, a true "singer/entertainer" could have a different set of skills/abilities that would superceed the limitations of spatial balloons - especially in player cantinas. Perhaps theirsongs that follow along with the music being played so that the singer could group with themusicianslike a backup band.

Sigh . . . all well and good to dream, but I truly don't see this prof happening . . .

Fabulous Idea!

I had initially started my character in entertainer in the hopes of doing all the image design. But I found that I really liked musician. I would LOVE to be an artist! I don't know how it would all work, but I love the sculptor idea. Instead of giving all the cool statues to the architects, the sculptors would be able to provide them.

Speaking of art...I've been looking for a Grunda painting since I first saw one a million ages ago. If I could produce my own artwork for my house....now that would be Fantastic!

Also, I would love to hear the songs. Even if the words are unlcear. That would just be sooo neat.

I wonder how long it would be before this would be a profession choice?

My problem is that there is barely demand for image design now, because of the lack of content, and the fact that it is an aesthetic profession entirely. I am doubtful that people would want to spend copious skill points on other purely aesthetic profession given the current status of image design. Even if image design and the other artistic professions did get more content, I'm still doubtful that many people would want to spend points on a profession that is not "useful". I'm much more of a fan of folding aesthetic elements into already "useful" professions and then giving the individual the choice on whether to focus on the aesthetic or the functional. For example, as it is now, architects can focus on harvesters or on furniture, and tailors can focus on style or bioengineered items.

I've never really considered ID to be an "entertainment" type of business... I mean, we change appearance. It's more a medical type than entertainment. We're physically changing appearance... Plastic surgeon work, heh. I'd actually prefer something along those lines rather than "artist"... I could see cosmetologist perhaps. I dunno...

Yah, it's DEFINITELY a long shot, but a really fascinating and wonderful idea. This would be a fabulous, albeit difficult addtion to the game. Nice thinking!

The thing about Image Design it is unlike any other profession in that it has a long term effect on other players. so lets that there are 100 IDers in SWG, and each one does 5-10 IDs a week. that means 2,000 - 4,000 players are effected per month. you really can't just look at the number of IDers, you have to look at the number of IDs. also the devs are currently looking into giving ID what it needs.
