Thread: What do I do when I'm in a band?

I'm very new at this musician business, only picking up an instrument and joining a band for the first time last night. I thought it would be cool to do to unwind after a hard day of crafting and hunting. Well, I had a real blast and now it's really created a dilemma--it was so much fun I have to figure out how to fit it into my original weaponsmith/rifleman plan, because I don't want to give up doing it.

But that aside, I'm really looking for some guidance in what to do once I'm invited into a band. I'm only up to Musician I on the Entertainment Master tree, so all I basically did was play Star Wars 1 and do flourishes now and then. When one of the members suggested we do our flourishes together, I was clueless on how to time it right. And if I don't know the song the band is doing, am I ruining things by playing Star Wars 1?

Is there a guide anywhere covering this?

In the perfect world, you group with those that are in the same level as you are, but in this game, there are too few... The band people should play the lowest player's level song to be nice

Something else I myself need to shed some light on please, if anyone knows for sure..

Does the song you play starwars1, rock, starwars2, folk, starwars3 differs in XP you get or the instrument you use?

Since this topic is really related.

False.

There are mutliple things that control your xp per tick:

1) Flourishes

2) listeners/watchers

3) Band/troupe members

4) Applause

5) Song

6) Instrument

All of these things result in the xp you earn. Maximum xp would be best song, best instrument, 20 member group all performing with a crowd that is using applause. These are all variable depending on what you have. Often times if xp is your goal, you'll do better with a lower song that allows more people to perform. However, switching to a lesser instrument will lower it a bit.

Even saying that, I do recommend that you consider 'taking one for the team' and play a lower instrument for a better sound. Because regardless of what the XP rate is, the most important thing is to not sound like garbage.

And yes, I have no tolerance for the multiple songs in a group exploit. Why bother playing a musician at all?

You are not ruining things by being new. Every musician at one time was in your position. A good group will not refuse to invite you or complain about only being able to play the lower songs. You gainthe mostexpat a givien skill level by playing your highest instrument on any song or playing any instrument on your highest song. So if someone new person joins the band and can only play sw1, than everyone can still play that song and gain their max exp by playing their highest insrtument.

Higher level instruments give better xp for your songs. You're still getting less playing a lower level song, but still far more than if you were using a slitherhorn.

Speaking as someone who doesn't need music xp, I usually won't join with people who have just started. I'd rather cut off my own ears that hear a slitherhorn play SW1 ever again.

You get the higher XP of your instrument or the song.

If everyone's playing SW1, you get XP based on your instrument.

If you're all playing Folk, then the Slitherhorn, Fizz and (aargh) all get you the same XP, but the guy with the Kloo will get a little bit more.

This isn't true. Playing my highest song with an ommni yields far more xp than with an mandoviol.

Wouldn't you say omnibox is a "higher" instrument than the Mandiviol? Mandiviol is merely master entertainer, but you have to be almost master musician to play omnibox.

IRT Topic Poster:

Most people will play whatever song you know. If they don't want to you can dance instead...unless you don't want dancing skills at all. Rarely should anyone say that if you can't play Folk then you might as well dance or leave...they will play SW1 usually.

Doing flourishes along with others without using the /bandflourish command isn't too hard, but it can be confusing communicated when to do it. If someone says do flourish 5 together, they should also say something like, "after two 'loops' do flourish 5 together." Then you just do the command for flourish 5 during the second loop...it has to be during the first measure of the loop it seems like, or you will play one more loop sometimes.
