Thread: Beware guilds bearing gifts !

Last week I had a nice customer in my cantina who started to talk to me, he told me all about his guild, a group of roleplayers, probably because he liked the way I play my own role so after a talk of 20 minutes or so he gives me a generous tip and tells me that I should drop by their tailor because his guild wanted to give me my dream outfit as a gift.

So I mail their tailor and he invites me to a new store around a specific time, it opened around 5am in the morning (CET+1 timezone) last saturday, where he setup a display so I can pick the dress I wanted which I couldn't describe enough for him to know which dress I meant.

First I had to attend a wedding on Saturday which was also on Corellia and I allready felt bad because I left the cantina which was pretty crowded, so after the wedding I went back to Mos Eisley and entertained people there until around 5am when I asked a friend to take me to the tailor shop on Corellia. When we got there there was no tailor around and there were only 2 dresses on display, so I spent money to see a tailor who isn't there when he said he would be.

Disappointed we headed towards the cantina there, which I found much to crowded and we went back to Tatooine where I mailed the tailor and decided it was time for bed, 7am in the morning.

The next day I get another mail from the tailor telling me again to drop by, which I didn't, I waited for the guy who told me about the dress, a gift from his guild, last night he was online and I talked to him, told him what had happened and he asked if I knew the name of the dress and the colors, he would bring it to me.

After another hour or so I get a message from him, he had a question and I felt it coming, and I was dead right about it too. He asked if I was still interested in joining his guild and I told my friend who took me to the tailor that the dress comes with a leash and shortly after that the guy tells me exactly that.

He said I could have the dress if I promised him to not join another guild until they approach me again to become a full member. So I told him that if he is going to put conditions on his dress to not even bother and waste his money on me. To which he replied that I'm ungratefull, that his guild gave me a generous tip and a 8.000 credits dress.

Now, I'm not really strapped for credits, I could buy the dress in 4 different colours and still have credits left but after a long discussion with both my friend and this guild member I told my friend the truth about how I felt, if the dress comes with a leash, a obligation to a guild, then I would forever associate this dress with that guild and as a result would hardly ever wear it, maybe only when their guild members come into the cantina.

At that point my friend offered to buy me the dress in the exact colours I wanted, which I declined. It was allready past my bedtime and I was still argueing with both my friend and this guy who promised me a gift and then decides to put conditions to the gift which totally devalues the gift in my eyes. I told the guy the truth, it was late, I needed to get some sleep and that what he was doing and saying to me was allready making me think less and less of his roleplaying guild.

I had allready told him that the only guild I would want to join was either a RolePlaying guild or a Entertainer guild, I am not sure if there even is a Entertainer guild on Tempest, but to end the discussion I just told him I would keep my options open and if he wanted to give me the dress then he could leave it with my friend who wanted to have a chat with him. I told my friend goodnight and he said he was going to have a talk with the guy. The last thing I saw before I logged off was a responce from the guild guy which said "Thank you, the dress is yours".

Now I feel really bad to be used like this, it makes me feel as if I'm someones property, which I am not. I really do not care if my friend received the Grand Ball Room Gown in red and blue, if he does have it then it's going straight into my house, where I never go anyway, and it'll be forgotten.

In my view this is a bribe, a leash and really I do not like to be treated as a cheap thing which can be bought with a dress and a above average tip, which he called generous.

I hope my friend talked some sense into him, because he wasn't listening to me, all he wanted to hear was that I appreciated being abused like this, which I do not. But to get him to shut up I told him I would keep my options open, so I could log off. I do not know what happened afterwards and I won't know until tonight, I do know that if my friend gives me the dress that it'll hardly be worn by me, it will only remind me that people are trying to buy my company when they first say here's a gift without any strings attached.

Does anyone else have experiences like this ?

It was flattering until he stated the terms of his gift after he landed on Tatooine

Hey, they just wanted you in their PA. I get a twinge of pride whenever I turn down membership.

Haven't been bribed yet though

You are missing the point, last week he tells me I can pick up my dream outfit for free from their master tailor and last night he gets all rude, after I tell him I still don't know what I want to do in the future, and only wants to give it to me if I promise not to join any other guild until they contact me again, who knows when that might be.

I don't see what the problem is, if there is one.

He was being sneaky I guess, maybe rude, but that happens. Don't let it bother you. What I'm saying is to not be bothered by it, butinstead let yourself have the ego boost that they just really wanted you in the PA. No sense in being upset about it, you'll just take away from your enjoyment of the game. Hey, you're a dancer, more suited to being happy if not a bit cocky as opposed to holding grudges and being bitter.

I guess you are right sweety, sometimes I do get alot of compliments during my performances

Like I said, I think it'll end up in my house and I'm never ever there because I enjoy performing too much to go wandering around sightseeing or doing anything else that takes me away from my profession.
