I'm talking of course about the recent discussion over whether or not to pull recursive macros.

On the positive side, we're finally getting what we want: at-the-keyboard entertainers. We also get to see the demise of buffbots. This is something we've been waiting for for, well, months. It's a great day for "true" entertainers everywhere. Not only that, but I expect to see a lot more respect for entertainers in the future. Heck, we might even start getting tips again. Not to mention the boost in pride over being an entertainer.

On the negative side, recursive macros were as great atool for live entertainers as it was for AFK ones. It freed up our hands so we could better socialize with the people in the cantina, which is what being an entertainer is really all about. With the possibility of recursives being pulled, it's going to become much more of a hassle to keep our songs running. It will also be stressful to keep coordinated performances going since you're going to have to activate the macro at JUST the right time lest your song hit a skip and sound bad.

While pulling recursive macros affects everyone in the game, it's mostly geared towards entertainers in my opinion.

Is the sacrafice truly worth it?

We'll be getting our profession back, but at a hefty cost.

Looking at it from this point of view, do you, my fellow entertainers, feel it's worth creating an annoyance in order to regain the dignity of our profession?

Should the developers postpone this until a better solution presents itself? We would have to put up with our greatest complaints, namely buffbots and AFK entertainers, but our gaming experience would be easier.

Personally, I could live with having to press F1 over and over again while performing if it meant going into the Coronet cantina and not seeing a single AFK tag above a name.

Sign me up under the 'totally worth it' column.
I find it not too difficult to time my flourishes when trying to perform an act, and imagine I'll do fine with my non-recursive macros to do some shows. Heck, it'll get my creative juices flowing more since I won't be as tempted to start my 'cycle through flourishes, repeat' macro while I chat. I'll end up with more modules of music, and work more on the part I really got into the profession for in the first place.
Besides, when my songs 'restart' when people /stoplisten anyway, there are other ways to mess up my show. I don't think this will be too big a part.

in my opinion is worth

my only option (and as i understood the only option for many real entrtainers) was to not play it

also we have to see how is implemented

i think will be still possible to stack some instruction in a single macro, but not to call other ones

so probably something like

/flourish 1

/pause 5

/flourish 4

/pause 6

/flourish 5

and so on

will still be possible (but just my opinion)

the difference is that you will have to push the dance or music macro button every let's say 120 secs

so not really a big problem if this will be possible

addendum

as a musician i never use this kind of macro and chose the flourishes during the song

yup if you are doing some awesome jamming is quite difficult to speak (but also if you jam you don't use that kind of macro)

but in more daily play, with people you know, you can 'anticipate' how the song will go and stack some flourishes when necessary (you can stack up to 4 flourishes)

this give you time to speak and socialize

It is possible to create a very long macro without looping. Most things done with looping can be done without for little to no extra effort. You can create a pretty active 10 minute entertainer macro. Is hitting a button every 10 minutes too much?

I've never understood how people can have so much trouble flourishing and chatting at the same time.

I suppose if you're wanting to put together a certain string of flourishes to play a song, that's one thing, but the way I do it is simple: I put the flourishes all in my hotkey bar and hit Flourishes 2 at a time every few seconds or so as needed.

As anyone who's been in the cantina with me while I play can tell you, I still have plenty of time to be able to goof around and do my best to entertain the customer.

It's worth it.

If they made me stand on my head to flourish, it'd be worth it.

If I had to do 10 pushups to flourish, it'd be worth it.

I'll pay any price, do anything at all, to eliminate the destruction of the social aspect of this game and to get back all the friends that have abandoned me because of it.

This is an extremely small price to pay.

I almost have stood on my head and flourished before...

Worst I ever did was leading the dancers on not one but two different dances.. With different flourishes for each... And leading the musicians... Keeping everyone flourishing all the time.. And still giving instructions in group chat.

I still don't think this is going to give Entertainers back the NPC Cantinas, just slow down the hologrinders, that is all.

From another post I made..

Is removing the recursive macro going to stop the almighly hologrinders? I don't think so, they will find a way around it. I really don't think this is going to give Entertainers the NPC cantinas back, and that I am ALL FOR!! It is just going to make having private buff bots much more dificult or secret.

They HAVE to stop the hologrind first, I think this is a "cut off your leg because my toe hurts" solution at this time.

My guess is all this is going to do is slow down the grinders (no flourishes) and keep them there longer in the NPC cantinas, make having bufbots harder and lead to a bunch of resentment from many of the off-peak-hour players as well as others. (oo and a few cancelations, like in the k's I think from Alts)

With publish 10 over the horizon, holo-grinders are already dwindling. You can see the effects in the cantinas, and even elsewhere; the ap crunch has started to become a problem as people master but don't move on to something new, and the other grinders are still trying to finish mastery. Due to the nature of the beast, supply leads demand. When you are going up in a skill, you are an ap producer. When you hit master, you are an ap consumer. Therefore, a decrease in demand for ap is preceeded by a decrease in supply. Since the supply dips before the demand, you get a shortage.

Anyway, that's besides the point. Hologrinders have a list of professions to do, typically in the same order. If entertainer becomes more trouble for the extra notch than other professions, it'll move to the end of the list, and people with other professions left on their list will go to those instead. ID is already near the end of the list now I suspect, and it's best to do all the elites at once... So if the other profs become too much of a pain for the holo-grinders, they will move the whole entertainer chunk of professions to the end.

FYI the thread is really just a poll: do you think it's worth it?
