Thread: AFK entertainers, tips and FUN!
When is enough... ENOUGH?
Quit whining about tips, either way. Quit whining about entertainers going AFK.
Why do I feel that way? When I go AFK as a musician, I am not trying to become a master musician with no "work". Quite the opposite. I started playing songs because there was a severe shortage if entertainers. This is on Rori, in the city of Restuss (Corbantis). There were often crowds of adventurers standing around in the hotel hoping someone would come entertain for a little while. I decided to sacrifice my hunting/sampling time and jumped on stage to help out. I did make enough exp to train musician 2, which is as high as I intend to go, and I only did that to gain a new song. When I climb high enough in my chosen profession to need those skill points back, Entertainer will be sacrificed, or if more entertainers start performing there, I will no longer be needed.
Do I demand tips for performing? Absolutley not. This doesn't mean that I don't appreciate them, I doubt that I will ever see enough income from it to even reimburse me the 1100 credits I put into it.. but then again, I didn't do it for personal gain, nor to even break even.
What difference does it make if I go AFK while I am providing this service? I am not benefitting from the exp because I am not climbing the skill tree. Did you have your BF/mind wounds healed while I was AFK? YES! If you use the line of reasoning that you will not tip because of that... Would you not buy a weapon from me as a crafter because you found out that I had sampled resources while AFK?
I tip, I tip because I needed that entertainer. I tip whether or not you are AFK. I usually tip more if you put on a good show, but I tip regardless.
When did this stop being a FUN GAME for you? I have been on the leveling/greed treadmill (EQ) and I started playing SWG because it is FUN! I will continue to play because I am having fun, and I enjoy helping others out, regardless of my profession.
And as been pointed out in many many posts, the economy is player run. If you don't want to tip, fine. But don't come back whining about there being no entertainers in your town because your tight grip on your wallet kept you from helping an entertainer defray the cost of putting on their show. Have you heard an entertainer whining about you not helping them run their delivery missions to pay for their training?
You're absolutely right. What was I thinking, enjoying the social aspect of the Entertainer profession! I look at the entire profession wrong. All we are, are a bunch of human NPC's just there to heal Battle Fatigue and Mind Wounds.
You have opened my eyes. From now on, I will just park my Entertainer front and center on the stage, and go AFK and watch TV. That's obviously more fun than actually sitting at the computer being social.
Thank you for the englightenment!
(All sarcasm aside, it is ironic to note that the other half of your post was complaining about people whining for tips, when you feel you should be tipped no matter what because you healed their Battle Fatigue. Pot. Kettle. Black.)
yes alot of sides but when you heel people who have no mind left tons of BF and don't tip then you do fell kind of jipped. This profession is about having fun, but not tipping for people helping you out and trying to make this world a funner place is just wrong and rude.
I look at it this way, while we are not the bigest bands to it Rori, why is it hard for people to pay 100 credits when they have 20,000 or more? I enjoy being a entertianer /soon to be musician, and don't really care about my tips that much. (heck I tip alot to docs and my fellow entertianers) But this "proffesion" is gimped to the other classes in money. insted of taking a second tree as a option like you did, weHAVE to take one up to make money. Fare? no, but it's whats happening, yea. and it may kill alot of would be entertainers dreams.
Tip tip tip. I am whinning but it is true. if you have over 50,000 credits and don't it you are a jerk and heck I don't want to see you in my cantina. what? I don't own one, well when I do then you will see. Wait by then thoughs jerks who have all the cash will own all the cantinas, and I have to pay them to play?!?!?! what the heck!!!!
hehe just kidding aorund with the last part.
But I don't really see your point of view. you are looking at teh profession from as secondary class. start a pure entertainer and see how much you like the tips. they really don't add up. Sure some people are great tippers, but some alot will never tip even when you sing, dance, and chat with them. Till more people tip will I stop whining.
The fact of the matter is this:
Musicians are a lot funner to play with when they aren't AFK, because you can coordinate together to make some really cool music. Do I hate musicians that go afk? No, but get off my stage because you are ruining my show by just standing there. Do I think less of musicians that go afk? Not at all, we all go afk once in a while.
What about people that never tip? I personally think it's rude but it's ultimately the persons decision whether they tip or not. Keep in mind that some musicians rely solely on tips for income.

Nope, as happens so often on here, you misunderstood. I did not say that I expected tips. I pointed out that if no one tips.. entertainers may dwindle in numbers. I don't give a hoot whether you tip me or not, because as I stated "I didn't get into it to make a profit, nor even break even." I did it to help out a desperate need.
Did I encourage eveyone to write a MACRO and leave their entertainer on, NO. As I stated, if the people that are interested in being entertainers show up there... I will stop AFK entertaining. Not hard to figure that out.
I love it when a talented musician gets on stage and performs. I watch past being fully healed, I /applaud, I /cheer. I chat. I tip.
And unlike so many others on here... I do not believe that I am the center of the gaming universe, and that everyone must play as I do, nor agree with me. I just pointed out that there can be unselfish reasons to be AFK for a time as an entertainer. And that it is silly to whine about being asked to tip entertainers because "they got their skills while AFK anyway." When they don't complain about paying for a weapon from a crafter that got all his materials while AFK. The problem is that like in life.. people don't mind paying for goods, but whine like a whipped puppy about paying for services.
Now, before you flame me , realize that I don't much care either way. Just pointed out that there are multiple sides to every story.
I think you saw a local need for entertainers and decided that you'd help out. This is a good thing. You also sound like if professional musicians come in to play a set, you're willing to move aside and enjoy the show.
The only thing I can see negative in what you are doing is going overtly AFK? I'd like *knock on wood* to reach a point where no entertainer goes overtly AFK while they play, meaning no AFK sign over there head. If you need ot go AFK for a long eriod, go sit down for a little while, if not, your bandmates will watch out for you for a few minutes. It just looks shabby. I don't think it will ever happen, especially among part-timers who are probably dabbling in music or dance for the same cool reasons Painwulf did - to fulfill a need.
Hopefully our audiences will come to understand that your more serious artists, the ones who can heal BF and mind wounds in no time flat, are gonna be more professional about it.
As far as tipping goes, ask all ya want. Be a d*ck about it and pester patrons about it. I don't ask anymore and I tend to leave groups that spam this. Again, I think this tendency disappears the higher trained the musician. If I don't like a situation, I'll just stop a show and typically pack up and leave.

Paintwolf,
You don't mind not getting tipped because you are not a full-time entertainer and do not rely on tips for income.
On the other hand, I'm glad that you graciously tip the way you do. I'm sure we all appreciate a player like you, even the AFK'ers if they were around to notice you.
Unfortunately for us,Paintwolf, not everyone is as nice as you.
