Thread: Entertainment Guilds?
Could someone explain to me the mentality of having Entertianment Guilds? This seems odd to me since entertainers are to be integrated members of a community of other professions. Having a Chef's guild seems as odd. But maybe I'm thinking of this wrong...
What is the benefit? Do you have a town of all musicians? If not, where is your guild hall, and do you all meet once a week or so from various planets? How exactly does this work?
An entertainer guild is a guild of people who like being entertainers and offer services to others to hire them out for gigs.
Guilds in general i guess began as the precuror to player cities. Since then, guilds grew to create their own towns. I think this is still predominantly the case, tho I know some cities are made up of more than one guild.
The benefit to joining any guild would be close proximity to others who share similar goals and can equally support each other in business. This is utopia, however - and i don't know of any cities/guilds that are 100% self-sufficient.
I'm still interested in knowing the answers to my original questions.

I think you just answered yourself there.
I have a satellite shop set up in a community that isn't an "entertainer guild" but the city is starting to specialize in entertainment. In my guild, I'm one of two entertainers (the other is a "bot"). There is utility in the division of labor, but it's not fun. For my guild, I'll only dance if someone gets on the line and says he has battle fatigue or whatnot, otherwise dancing by myself in the cantina or grouping with the afk musician bot is NO FUN.
On the other hand, the community in which I have my satellite shop is much more fun because there is a critical mass of entertainers. We can all dance and BS in the cantina together, until someone else from the town comes in for healing. It makes the cantina a social place when you have a critical mass of entertainers so you're virtually guaranteed that someone is there at all times, and it's a fun place to be. Even the hardcore fighters have basic2, and they get down with us in their hawtpants occasionally.
Entertainment guilds are a good idea, I think. Always a lively cantina, and always something for entertainers to do. At the same time, however, I think there probably need to be patrons in the town, if not in the guild, so you're not dancing like nobody's watching (uhh cause they're not watching!).

what she said
But as a guild, entertainers can get together to do shows, performances, and other coordinated stuff. It's a place people can go if they need an entertainer.

Maybe i'm a bit jealous... I'd like entertainers spread out into all the cities and towns across the galaxy rather than all hanging out together.
Problem is, spread out = not many of us together in any one place. That means the chances of having someone to talk to while we wait for someone's busted up arse to come in are lower...which means advancement is slower, which means it just ain't gonna happen most of the time, because without the reasonable hope for advancement people aren't going to do it. Especially when 80% of the people doing Entertaining are doing it because of a little blue cube, and they don't give a rat's arse about entertaining in and of itself in the first place.
As Tiaga said elsewhere, the desired goals of entertainers and their patrons are actually cross-purposes. Entertainers want company, which means bunching up. Patrons want availability, which means spreading out. The areas where the critical mass between number of performers in the same place to keep each other company while waiting for patrons to wander in are few and far between.
A guild and/or player city devoted to Entertainment would have a better chance of acheiving that critical mass, I think. Especially if it were set up near a popular adventuring spot.

That doesn't require a guild for it though. My cantina is like that - it's quite the lively place. (Well, been a bit slow over the holidays as people haven't been around.) Few people are in the same guild. In fact, many are unguilded. A lot of them don't even live in the city. (A couple even come from other servers.)

Likewise... you don't need a guild to do the latter. 'Talus Moon' my band on Eclipse consists of entertainers from different planets and different guilds. The band is what unifies us... not a city or a guild tag.
When it comes down to it having an entertainer PA is simply an easy way of identifying other like-minded individuals (theoretically, assuming it is reasonably selective about who is invited).
