I've always thought it came from Robert Bork who was a supreme court nominee of reagan's who

got, well, borked in his confirmation process.

It's definitely not a SW thing, and I've heard it mentioned a few times before I started getting on the internet, so I'm not sure. I use it myself, but for the life of me I can't remember where I picked it up.

Ah, here's something: http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/B/borken.html

So it may have started as 'borken' (typo of 'broken'), and moved from there to 'borked' to indicate something that just doesn't worked.

The first time I heard it was from Holocron referring to something that went horribly bad during beta.

The term "borked" came from The Muppet Show and a character called The Swedish Chef.

I thought it was from people who couldn't type 'broken,' or intentionally typed it 'borken.'

Although I, too, adore the Sweedish Chef. Mmm bork, bork!

I took a Law and Ethics class a couple years ago, and during the course of the lectures, my professor said that the term "Borked" came from Bork, the Supreme Court Nominee, as others mentioned above. It's been used many places besides online and in games. Hope that helps.

While I realize the irony, yes, I do believe this to be true.
