Thread: How do Entertainers make money?

Hehe, oh sure, if you want to bring role-playing into it.

My playing has slowed to the casual level at this point (maybe6 hours in 2 weeks, if that?), my house is nothing but a large storage closet. I spent days agonizing over furniture and art placement, but eventually resigned myself to the futilityof it all (even my RL friends that play don't visit my house) and left it half decorated. Perhaps it is the result of a general pessimism with regards to SWG as a whole or the fleeting joy that comes with materialism, who's to say?

I didn't know it had left.

Since June 2004, running one of the game's first completely nonviolent characters. Testing the limits of non-combat MMORPG play and trying to have fun into the bargain (although the developers make it difficult).

Combat is no longer compulsory.

Just an idea, might be crap, might not be.
What I'd like to see is an expansion of the watch|Listen radial menu

You could have watch|listen>
1.Mind buff (how much the entertainer charges and stats it does)
2.Heal mind (cpu)
3.HealBattle fatigue (cpu)
4.Watch|listen no effect -somepeople actually like to watch|listen to entertainers for the sole reason that they enjoy it.

With the entertainer able to set the cpu rate on the basic restoration and one off charge for buffs. Cap what the cpu rate at something reasonable and let the entertainer decide how much cheaper they're willing to go or not at all.

This would,
A)Stop people having to spam "tip me" every 5 secs.
B)Allow entertainers to make a fair amount of money based on the service they offer.
C)Allow those people like myself who enjoy socialising in cantinas to become part of the audience without feeling bad for not tipping. (and not being spammed for tips)

Entertainers provide a service alot of people use but seem very reluctant to pay for, let them have some control over selling it.

Oh and disable it if the player is AFK. No problem if you want to afk grind but u reduce yourself to being less than a NPC....they at least wern't given the choice to be there.

On the subject of tips, do you think people would be more generous if entertainer healing was something that needed to be directed at people, much like Medics?

It seems there's a mentality of "well, they're doing it anyway, so I may as well watch for free" or simply people don't realise that we need money like they do...

I just wonder if a "Perform To..." command would help this out (and help with AFK-ers)

Yes, and we're discussing these types of options pretty heavily now in the recent In Concept thread regarding entertainers.

I've always kind of agree with the status quo here, though. I kind of think it makes more sense for people to just be able to watch and get the benefits automatically. I think if I go to watch a show, in game or in real life, the art, the dances, the music, it makes me feel good mentally. I think that's the basic concept behind that...It heals my emotional wounds, and my life fatigue.

I think, however, buffing is a whole other ballgame. I consider that to be an application of an enhancement, and therefore should be controlled by the actual dancer focussing their performance on someone else.

I just don't think we're after a reflection of reality model here though. If we were, only one act could be booked at a venue at a time, and they would be paid by the establishmentrather than scrounging for tips. We would not allow all of the shouting in spatial, nor crowding in the middle of the floor, entryway or halls. There would likely be a stage in cantinas too -a properly set-aside place for entertainers for the evening's show to perform rather than out in the tables and chairs.

Rather, I think we're after a concept that functions as an integrated role in agame. If we have certain skills that give us a key component of the great cycles of overall gameplay, and if use ofthese skills aresupposed to be our means of subsistence (tips), we have to consider if it's working. And it just doesn't seem to be any more. Ask again how often people are receiving tips, or even thank you's, for our primary roles as the correctors of battle fatigue. The lack of appreciation (tips or even acknowledgement of a service performed) is evidence of the devaluation of this role. And I think it's devalued because it is taken at will, rather than bestowed.

Very true. Maybe there's scope for both, in that players can "just watch" entertainers and get healing, but if an Entertainer chooses to actively "perform to" them, they get healed faster? /shrug

The best way i've found to make money is to be atk and chat with everyone that comes through the door. even without doing buffs, i've made about 200k in the past couple days.

Found another way. Now that we have the perpetual planet and auction channels, I've noticed that some people have been using them to ask for entertainer buffs. One particular person asked on planet chat today if there were any master dancers or musicians on the planet. I said I was. And, she asked if I'd be willing to go to Moenia to buff a group of players going up to the Corvette. Naturally, I obliged, and was paid 100K for my efforts.

Of course, this is a double edged sword, as I've already seen one buffbot advertising their services on the Tatooine planetary chat.

But, my point is, keep your eyes and ears open to the public chats and somebody might need your services.

I'm really slow at picking up on some things but somebody in my group made a good point the other day - if you all go to an Entertaner Mission terminal and get missions for the Cantina you're playing in anyway, you can get a few extra credits as you play "for free." For example, in Mos Eisley, get missions from the terminal just opposite the Cantina that start 28m to the North-West and to complete them, simply play/dance in the Cantina.

Granted, the rewards are only like 100c per mission (and that will be split among your group) but at least it's "free cash."
