Thread: Deny service, a good or bad thing?
I only entertain when I want a break from the monotany of crafting or fighting.. and I love doing it when I do. Its just a different aspect of the game which no other MMORPG has currently.
I will never use the /deny command.. no reason to, but I also agree that it may end up being a bad thing in the end. Humans are greedy .. for the most part.. myself included in some ways. For that reason there may be groups of roving entertainers who will uset he command avidly if they dominate a cantina with no one else in it.. and if they can deny once causing the entire group they are part of to do the same.. this could really become an issue.
Enjoy your 25K, and sleep easy knowing you are one of the reasons our profession is going to the birds.
For bedtime reading, might I suggest perusing the ToS you click past to play the game? Specifically the part that reads, "you may not use or distribute macros or other programs which would allow unattended game play.".
But I am remiss, I neglected to answer your question. The only other profession I am aware of that can make large sums of cash in bed is prostitution. Maybe they should implement that profession so you and others like you can choose that over the entertainment professions and we can restore our good name.
Have a pleasant day.

the 'bad' way was also told by the developers as the only argument that has kept it out of the game this long... to EXTORT other players for tips... this is why you cant /denyService [PLAYERNAME] and the deny list doesnt stay when you log out... that way you can just do a /who on your planet, deny everyone on it and wait for them to come to you... you MUST have a target for /deny or it does nothing.
the only downside to this implimentation is the fact that for those that use it the way the devs intended, they cant set up a persistant /deny list to load when they log in(if they did something to deserve /deny, you wont ever want to let them heal from you again anyways). but i think its a fair tradeoff than to make it easy to extort players
Actually, I practiced this a bit tonight using an AFK dancer as my guinea pig (I figured she wouldn't care). It looks like you *can* do /deny [playername] to put/remove someone onto your list. I was able to do this with the dancer untargeted, and when I had an NPC targeted. This would allow someone to make a macro or alias to consistently deny individuals. I think this would lean more towards the 'good' use, since it's easier to keep a list of people who cause trouble than to constantly update with everyone on the planet.
A couple of questions for people who may have tested more: is there a command to display your deny list? During my testing, I got lost a couple of times as to whether or not my guinea pig was in deny mode or not. Does your target get a message that he/she has been denied? And what if you're in a group? Does one denial negate the whole group's healing, or just the denier's addition? And does it make a difference if the deny is applied after grouping or before?
Really? I could make 25k a night while I sleep without any expense of resources or maintenance? Wow. What profession is that?
It's called Novice Artisan. I would call 25K net gain a night a failure of my harvesters. Happens on resource shifts. And you know what ? It's even legal and moral.
First of all let me say this, I am a musician on the side i.e. I have a full time job to pay the bills in real life. I make some money on the side (Don't believe everything about what you hear on musicians making tons of cash because it isn't true. Unless they have been around for 10 years and have produced more than 2 gold albums) On a given night my band makes tops of 400 bucks. We could make more playing cover tunes but believe me your never gonna go any were playing someone elses music. The only way your gonna make it, is to bust your rear and produce something that catchs some record Exec's attention.
So with that let me get on with why i'm posting this. I for one do npt believe in the /denyservice command. WHY? Well in real life I cannot deny service to anyone in the club or venue I am in. The bouncers and event staff can toss them out on their rear if they are doing something very bad, And If someone is say tossing beer bottles at me then I can sure as heck say that the bouncer will be tossing them out. I know its happened. No by using the /denyservice command you may be cutting someone out of the picture that may not deserve your talents. I prefer to RP it. In reality if one person is being rude it usually would ruin the fun of everyone in the club. WHY you ask? because they usually start a fight and inocent people get involved that should never have been involved and then their fun/night out ends up ruined and then everyone is mad.
NOW onto the point of money and tips. If someone doesn't tip my character OH Well. Many times when playing out, we make a portion of the door cover charge and drink sales. if its a slow night I make nothing. Infact I have had 1 night I made $13 bucks (Sundays usually are not a good nights at making money at some clubs). SO in game terms some nights not many people stop by and help us the entertainer make money. I in real life will never BEG a patron for money for me. I will however remind the patraons to tip the Bartender and waitress's.
NOW lets look at exotic dancers. I've dated a few, I've known a bunch (Being a musician you get to know them). If they are a good dnacer i've known them to make from 400 a night to 2000 a night. On a slow night they make 25 to 50 bucks. Bad dancers make nothing to 150 bucks tops. Those that are good interact with people, winking, smiling, flirting, making eye contact, etc. They NEVER will greet you and say "Hi Bob thanks for coming in tonight, enjoy the show!" UNLESS you are a regular customer and get to now them. And in those case you get more attention than anyone else. Especcialy if you tip good or treat them with repect, or they just flat out like you.
SO, what i'm getting at here in this post is this, /denyservice don't use it unless someone is causing you nothing but grief. i.e being rude and obnoxios, Ask them to stop and warn them. If they keep it up after a couple of warnings. then feel free to /denyservice and tell them I warned you. Give them another chance to straightin up by telling them if they stop acting like an animal you'll be happy to remove the /denyservice. If they stop then remove it. If not carry on with your promise. I would then add that player to my ignore list so as next time they come in I know who the joker is and can role play it and ignore them. If they stop being rude then feel free to do as you wish, RP it. Also don't be begging for tips, WORK for them. I as an entertainer lie the RP aspects of that profession, it hits close to home for me. If I in real life was entertaining for the money I'd have gone broke and starved to death many years ago. Either that or I would have been like all the other rockers in the 80's on the strip (Hollywood/LA strip that is) and been living off of Rock & Roll tomato soup or Rock & Roll Spagetti in a 1 room apartment with 2 other bands. I play music for the love of it and the adrenaline rush it gives me. Its a natural high/buzz. Not to mention it lets the creative juices flow. If I make it big, GREAT but i sure won't be blowing my money on FAST CARS, BIG HOUSES, and Other things. Because I won't have the money it takes to do that for another 5 to 10 years and even then in the Music industry of America HERE TODAY, GONE TOMMORROW is a real thing.
Oh and on a side note someone posted a thread about real musicians being Image designers. I have to admit... its true atleast as far as Hair Bands and metal bands go. Either that or we date Image Designers if we stink at it ourselves.
So if I rambled... sorry, If you enjoy the post... Great, If you disagree or hate it... Thats you opinion and your welcome to it in America.
NOTE: ROCK & ROLL TOMATO SOUP IS HOT WATER AND KETCUP (very cheap to make can fill you up but tastes like YUK). ROCK & ROLL SPAGETTI IS TOP ROMEN NOODLES AND KETCUP (once again very cheap, very filling but tastes like YUK!) HAIR BANDS ARE WHAT BANDS LIKE POISEN, BON JOVI, WARRANT, MOTLEY CRUE WERE CALLED IN THE MID TO LATE 80's MUSIC ERA
"NOW lets look at exotic dancers. I've dated a few, I've known a bunch (Being a musician you get to know them)."
I just want to say that I have been a musician for my entire life, as has a good portion of my family, and I don't know any exotic dancers via "being a musician"... ![]()
OK Let me clarify that a bit then. Since maybe I cannot speak for all musicians
Being a Musician that plays Hard Rock/Heavy Metal You get to know them. Maybe playing Blues, Jazz, Classical, C&W and Rap you do not . But when you play the style of music I play, it just seems to go hand in hand. Even when I was playing straight up Rock and Roll, and Blues Rock i've met Exotic dancers.
Having the ability to do this makes me feel so much less like a doormat and more like a real person. And, well... when a person comes in with full wounds and there's a novice entertainer and a master dancer in the cantina, and the master dancer does deny service... you can really tell the difference.
Anyway, this has already seriously improved my feeling about dancing in public cantinas. I'm going to try to perform semi-regularly again, in the hopes that some of my way of doing things will rub off on the patrons and entertainers who've grown to think that talking in the cantina is unusual...
Here's my take on the whole situation. Deny service is like a gun, neither good nor bad. What makes it a good/bad thing is the user. Pay attention to the entertainers and use your judgment. There are quality musicians and dancers out there who work hard to make the environment in the cantina an enjoyable experience. Deny service makes their job a little easier. Pain in the butt teeny-bopper can't get healed? Probably won't stick around.
Like any other griefer, you ignore them and they don't get your business. Don't make some asinine comment and say that all entertainers will use this feature to extort money out of their clients. There are several entertainers that I trust will use this power responsibly.
Don't worry about the bad that could happen, but help to make sure the good does.
In the patch notes, it's written that deny service works only for the current play... So it's a useless command. I can deny service for people during the song. If I stop the deny list is erased ?
I wonder why SOE works on useless commands and prefere broke classes like carbineer or nerf gig missions...
Maybe like someone else said, it's pet galaxies and not starwars anymore...

I think I agree with Kuildeous, ultimately probably won't do much. Its in place now and everyone is making so much hew and cry over the "possible abuses and uses" that they are creating something that isn't there yet.
Entertainers themselves and afew of the general "I don't like being forced into a cantina to heal" types are making a mountain out of a molehill. Its creating bad press that isn't actually there yet.
This game is only 2 months old, we just started the first "in school" phase with the game. We really don't have a good feel for any of the population dynamics yet.
We're having master profession die offs in all professions but especially entertainer as people go on to spend their skill points in other things, a natural process in a one character game system I would proffer.
There will possibly be times of high entertainer population and low entertainer population, we're heading for a low right now. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Rarity means either more respect or more people sliding over to fill the gap for their own sakes. Those who are entertainers should try to find ways to keep the profession entertaining after master, develop clientele to support them and other entertainers and find ways to still have fun with it.
Let those wanting healing seek it out, or let entertainerswait for the AFK'ers to leave after mastery and then head back into the public cantinas if you really want to.
/deny service is a tool like any other, open for abuse by some and used necessarily by others. I for one willwait a few months to see if it actually has any affect at all. Since I'm not an entertainer who is interested in the healing ability (and I realize many entertainers take the opposite view), or consider it essential to my character concept, I only empathize with the avoid abuse and harrassment and those wanting to roleplay the GCW denial by hampering the enemy.
I like tools, and a variety of them.
