You are missing out. There are real entertainers out there. (mine is Path on Starsider) Some will make you laugh, some sad, some just confused but it is...entertaining.
i prefer the AFK people...and i am really glad most of the "entertainers" are gone....i dont find anything about it even mildly entertaining...the word i would use is annoying....
what i dont understand is why all of you entertainers feel compelled to interact with people .....when i go to a concert or see a band in a club or even go to a strip club, the acts dont "interact"..they stay on stage and do their show.
did it ever occur to any of you that people really dont want your chit-chat and dont really watch or listen to you...all we want is to be healed ASAP and be on our way...
Your last statement is not entirely true. Some people want to be healed ASAP and be on their way. Many others want to have conversations, or have someone to listen to their tales of glory or woe, or whatnot. Clearly the original poster is one of those who misses having the personal touch of an entertainer at the keys.
In my cantina show career I've seen a lot of different reasons why people want this kind of interaction with entertainers. Some are crafters or lone hunters who spend a lot of their time alone as they pursue their professions... they get lonely. Others may be those who for one reason or another don't make friends as easily as others... and an entertainer who bridges that gap and makes contact provides the conduit to interaction with the community that they wouldn't otherwise have. Still others just want to share their glorious exploits, and get a little good, old-fashioned bragging in.
Social entertainers are here for all of those people, and more.
The reason that we entertainers feel the need to interact with people is that we're not being paid by the club to perform; we rely on those very people who come in to hand over a tip for our livings. Just being there doesn't mean being tipped - often we have to make contact to stand out from the crowd. We have to earn that tip. Entertainers in this game don't make their livings the way they do in the real world; we're not paid on a contract from the house, from album sales royalties, from ticket or merchandise sales. Comparisons to the way entertainers behave in the real world are apples to oranges.
However, it is also important for entertainers to realize that there are different kinds of audiences that come in. Some, like Naufragus, want nothing more than to get their game mechanics taken care of and get back out to what they want to be doing, and that's fine. Others will be thrilled to have you chat their little ears off. One of the marks of the truly successful entertainer is the ability to quickly distinguish the kind of person a given patron is, and play to their style. We have to give the audience what they want (within reason, of course). If a cantina patron is there for reasons of game mechanics only, let them know you'll have them on their way in no time, and shut up and heal. Those that want the socializing, give them the time of their lives. Professional entertainers in this game find ways to read their audiences quickly and effectively, and are generally very successful as the result.
I must say that I have seen this as well...
I was not playing for several months, then started playing again with my Musician/Artisian. I have a very hard time anymore finding a cantina with a band. A real good to honest group of enterainers, dancers, musicains playing/dancing together. Lately all I have seen are large groups of AFK macroed entertainers...
It is depressing, I used to regularly set in with the Coronet band, now you cannot tell who is playing/dancing/entertaining and where the group is. There's simply a large gaggle where previously entertainers and musicians would line themselves up in sections and groups like a real performance....
It is worthy of sadness and I do miss all meeting of new people that I used to do while playing (music). Those both those who I played with and those who sought music and dance to heal their wounds.
Hoping that the Cantina bands will return,
Rasorow
Cheers, friend, soon the true entertainers will again take their place in the galaxy! One day we will barely remember this LAMer hell we've been wrung through. It is true thatthe entertainmentcommunity has lost some of our greatest leaders, but many of us remain and can remember the times of light before the darkness of macrotaining draped across the galaxy. We are the ones who can influence the future entertainers, showing them the joys of live entertaining.

Some of us are already working towards that as we speak... the time of the LIVE entertainers will rise again.

Good news!
Here's an idea, though - I wonder if it would be possible for player city cantinas to specify a no-afk policy? I know that detecting all afk'ing isn't easy, but at least it would stop the basic afk'ing and this would seem to suit everybody's play style.

Yes, there are cities with a no-AFK policy. Mos Oasis, Tatooine on Ahazi for example still has the law on the books (as far as I'm aware) that AFK "performers" found within the city limits will be /warned, then shot. Of course, we no longer have citywarn, so laws are difficult to enforce.
The only way I see to enforce such policy would be to ban from individual buildings, or a /cityban by the militia. Yes, it takes policing, but a city who really wanted to try to preserve the integrity of ATK entertainment could at least take the stance and police it as much as possible. Murder within my society is illegal. Yet murder still occurs. Police try to catch as many murderers as they can... and that's all anyone can really do.
I would personally like to see more anti-AFK policy from cities and venues. Will it happen? Don't know. But I do know that to officially allow AFK shows an admission of validity at some level, and acceptance breeds encouragement.

couldnt i just as easily tell my tale of woe to the Bio Engineer standing next to me....I dont need a special profession around just to talk to someone. I can have witty banter with anyone not just dancers.
Well certainly dear, but nobody thinks to tip the Bio Engineer for witty banter. For us, that is to be expected. Why? Because they'd rather have somebody like me in the cantina doing the things I do than some boor. That's why they tip me, so I won't have to go out on missions to pay the maitenance pool.

You choose to hear only what you wish to. "Many" people enjoy those things. If you are not one of them, feel free to chat with a Bio Engineer who cares. I made an honest effort to explain the bigger picture, giving you the benefit of the doubt that perhaps you were interested, rather than simply being here to be a troll.
Very well, you are merely a troll. At least troll well... your skills are lacking. JasonK managed to get a real rise going briefly froma few of the peoplehere... perhaps you can learn a trick or two from him.
I know that there are others who feel as you do, that they want to be left to their own devices and don't want to have to interact with others if they don't feel like it. Single-player games may be your answer... Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing Games may not be your thing.
Now shoo.
