With a decent sized band and customers you can get 20 xp/pulse and more. It's not as bad as all that.

I'm a musician at music 4.

I play Starwars 3 with a Kloo Horn and get 15xp a tick all by myself.

As a musician you have to flourish twice a tick to get full XP, this pretty much means chain flourishing. Basically, as soon as you get the XP message hit two flourishes and wait for the next XP message.

When someone /cheers for you, get more XP.

The most XP I've received in one pulse was 31 or so.

I am past half way to novice musician, and it really hasn't been that bad. I think dancing and music XP needs a nice tweak, but frankly, you NEED a good grind to keep people playing in Cantinas. After I hit Virtuoso I doubt I'll play as much as I do now. I just wish I didn't have to flourish as much.
