Thread: Why are there no tippers?
As a customer, I only tip entertainers that do not have an afk tag up. I also don't tip someone a second time who doesn't consider it necessary to show any kind of reaction to a tip (not even a smille, bow, wave or whatever - I figure if someone doesn't react at all to a tip they apparently don't need tips). And yes, I do think it helps if you have an entertainer title up, cause when I see a doctor/marksman or whatever standing in the cantina playing aslitherhorn I figure they're just healing up their own mind wounds and leave them alone. Also, it may actually be easier to get tips in the less crowded cities, since you're often enough the only entertainer there. If there are 7 entertainers in Theed's cantina, the chances of someone giving you a tip aren't too high.
With my entertainer toon, it just seems impossible to make a living off tips alone... at least when you're a musician. If you're a female dancer you do get a bunch of tips. Dancing around for 3 days in a skmimpy outfit resulted in about 5k of tips for me (plus a bunch of obtrusive 'fans', yuck), while playing music for 3 days got me a whole 350 credits (but I wasn't harassed at at least), heh. So now I just do the entertaining for fun and run deliver missions for cash :/.
Well mate
i entertain for people in a city where there was no entertainers and i said they dont need to tip me because im afk i had 0credits on me
then i come on in the morning and i had 70k
i went back thru my chat log to personaly thank every singel one of them
Sometimes you go weeks without a singel tip then POW you get tips for a week then you go without tips again then they start again

I would say you have a better chance of making money on the adventure planets, there's more of a need there as adventure's are always getting stomped the the local wild life : ).

A newentertainer walked into the cantina yesterday, wearing the newbie outfit. I tipped her 3k to get her started, and she came to the table I was sitting at with a friend and started playing there. That was nice, but then she started sending tells asking if I could give her any clothes, or a crafting tool, or a couple of other things she could easily afford with the tip I sent her. I don't know how often that kind of things happen, but if people have the impression that a lot of entertainers are "give 'em an inch and they want a mile" type of players, then maybe that's why big tips are sort of rare.
I'm not an Entertainer, but i agree with the reply about hanging out in Cantinas on Adventure planets. Planets like Dathomir and Dantoonie are good places for group hunts. Too often, the group i'm with usually has a few people with Mind wounds, but i've never seen an Entertainer on any of those planets. Its good to be healthy before going out into the wild on those planets. Getting big tips may happen more often there because the mission bounties are 5 to 10 times greater than the starter planets. So, people will usually have a bit more money on them after a hunt. There are only a few "outposts" on those planets and they are very small. There are usually around 15 people standing around waiting for a group to form or waiting for additional group members to arrive.
Dancing or playing an instrument in a Cantina in Coronet with 15 other Entertainers makes it difficult to determine who to tip and why.

There are a number of reasons why AFK is a problem. However, one of them is the fact that the AFKers significantly reduce demand for entertaining services. With AFKers healing for free there is little incentive for people to tip for the healing function of our profession.
I do agree that entertaining is hardly a professional path for someone who wants to make a lot of credits fast. You need to be sure you are talking to the people around and putting on a show. You dont need to spam the room with useless garbage but at least try to be entertainng. Also get out of the big cities & find a less populated area to play. Without a /bandtip option a lot of people won't bother tiping everyone in a group. They'll just get someone who looks like the leader and give them 10k assuming that it will get spread around. I always try to ask the patron's intent if I get a big tip but I know that doesn't always happen.
I have fun entertaining but I haven't managed to make a lot of money with it. I've been working on some combat skills and have been mining off and on to pay for my house and stuff.
Just wandering around the forums this morning and started reading this. From my non-entertainer point of view, Vitahl hits the nail on the head for me. All it takes to get me to listen or watch a entertainer is someone saying "hello" or "how's it going?" and I'll make a point of tipping them what I can afterwards.
The thing of it is, I walk into a busy cantina these days and half the people are AFK whilst the other half are busy training each other, talking about their costumes, etc. No acknowledgement that I'm even around, even if I offer a greeting. After awhile I even stopped getting a simple "thank you" after tipping.
So now I make it easy on myself; target one of those helpful AFK types, get my battle fatigue healed and get the heck out of there. The up side for me? I get to hold on to my credits...why tip someone who can't be bothered to have a RL presence in-game.

That is a very true point.
My alt account has no entertaining skills (he is too serious to engage in such "silliness"), so I am at the mercy of the entertainment community. And yeah, with AFKers, I really feel threatened out in the dangerous world </sarcasm>
When I walk into a cantina, I ask, "Who is entertaining here?" I keep track of who answers. If no one answers me, then I will walk out with the same number of credits in my wallet as I had when I walked in.
I encourage everyone to do that. If you are too busy training or /groupsaying to make a new patron feel welcome, then you are not any more entertaining than an AFK bot.
I agree wholeheartedly with the last couple of posts.
What is worse is I like to listen to musicians, and many times I walk in they are all in a group, but afk with macro flourishes and all playing different songs.
SOUNDS HORRIBLE!!. I usually have to turn my sound down.
However, I have heard / seen, when entertainers are not afk, bands that play the same song are synchronized and have an awesome sound. With dancers synchronized as well. That I like a lot and those are the people that get the 10k+ tips!!
