Thread: I sent a Letter to TH

This is what I wrote:

Dear Kurt,

I am writing to you on behalf of the entertainer community. As you know we represent 4 recognized professions. Over the past two years we have been dealing with being on a back burner, and when we get developer attention, we often receive updates past due, or seamless right hooks across in the form of abilities not asked for or in preference to make combat professions more easily accessible to us.

I speak of AFK entertainers and the foresight of what is to come if the inspirational buffs are published as they are to a live server. It is no surprise that afk-macros, while accepted in policy, is destroying the very core of what entertainers are supposed to be, live performers. With the new inspirational buffs, a combat type or artisan can just walk up to an entertainer, a novice entertainer, and receive the same buff a master can give. The entertainer does not have to acknowledge the player, and the player can just get thier buff and leave without compensating the entertainer for thier trouble.

Many of us suggest that the new inspirations are great! However, to eleviate the probability of buff-bots, and provide a solution for entertainers to receive fair compensation for services, the community proposed the idea of a UI window when a performing entertainer is targeted. The window is a accept/deny box with a field to type in a amount for services. This box cannot be macroed unless by a 3rd party program which is illegal by gaming policy.

Kurt, I know you are a busy man, and you must read many letters. However, I must ask you to please consider this post as a cry from the entertainer community. Please relay this message to development. We desperately will need a window to allow us to receive fair compensation for services. We do not want to be exploited for our services as we learn our professions.

Thank you,

Nouva

Thanks for "speaking for us" but your name's not blue.

To be clear, I don't object to what you said, I object to you phrasing your letter as representative when it might not be. You didn't run it by the rest of us first, you didnt accept revisions, and then sent it to him. You took it upon yourself to express your opinions as "everyone's" opinions.

Just because I agree with you, doesn't mean I think you should have gone and said that on your own and pretended to be our voice.

Sorry.

You are very welcome. My name doesn't have to be blue to speak as a representative ofcommunity I have been part of since alpha. You agree with me, so obviously I represented your voice well enough for you to respond. TH is a community relations representative, and does not only listen to blue names. I took initiative when I saw no action being done. In fact, I waited a few days after the CU was put onto TC5, a place where every "blue name" should have been if they were not already.

Instead of condeming my action, why not follow suit and write a letter to TH as well? And post what you have written here. The voice of the community correspondant is one voice that goes into a mailbox that will drown in many more letters outside our profession. If several voices from the community hits his mailbox, maybe he will take action sooner, like before the changes go "live." Something to think about, I don't mean to come off as crass, and I apologize.

And what evidence do you have that they haven't done anything? What makes you think I haven't done anything?

My point is, go share your opinions with "kurt" as much as you like, and I'll share my opinions, and I'll put my trust in our correspondents to do their job, because I've got a bit more faith in them than you seem to.

This is where we differ, making demands in the name of "the community" smacks of hubris, whereas I feel posting constructive suggestions in the proper fora and the proper time does.

Thank you Nouva, I found that to be well written, calm, and expressive of my many concerns without edging into hysteria. I'd take you as representative of our community any day based on that!

I hope they don't push this out in its current form. I'm not even an Entertainer but most of my bestest friends are!

I've written so many letters to TH and Tiggs, they probably just laugh when they see my name in their Inbox now.

I did, however, shock them enough with a "Thank You!" titled PM that Tiggs actually responded. I was thanking them for the concept of the inspiration buffs, but the proposed implementation of the buffing system has resulted in some seriously negative feedback in the In Concept thread about the new buffs, and asked either TH or Tiggs or anyone to get in there and at the very least say "we've read and are continuing to read your feedback, and it has been passed to the Dev team." That would work wonders for people's concerns that this will be another Theater Manager Quest In Concept thread (where there was never 1 single follow-up post by a Dev after months of feedback and concerns, all of which went Live without changes, and the thread lingered for months AFTER the quest went Live, thoroughly proving anyone who mattered completely forgot about it).

No sign yet of any response in that post by a Dev, yet.

And I think the issue with the phrasing of your letter is the opening statement. It sort of insinuates we've all gotten together and decided upon the message together, and had you send it. *shrug* I dunno, any attempt at communication helps. They need to hear from those of us who don't like this proposed system. When it gets to the point where PM's are being sent in opposition to something, they must know they need to reexamine whatever they're pitching. We can only hope.

Good grief. As if we don't already have things to argue about. This is not worth the time to be expending your energy on fighting each other over the wording of a letter that was meant to be perfectly innocent.

I don't, "riflegirl?" All 4 entertainer professions mastered...perhaps my opening statement was taken out of context when I meant, "I represent one of many entertainers in the community..." Do not get uppity with me because I took an initiative all of us should have done by now.

Thank you

The devs know that anything that is an "official" stance of a community represented by a correspondent would by emailed to them from that correspondent in the quarterly report and/or posted in the correspondent forum on a more regular basis by that correspondent. I think your email was likely taken as you meant it and not as the collective voice of the community, so I don't have any issue with what you sent TH not to necessarily imply that I am entitled to having an issue with it...

Also, please know that the correspondents (including myself) do frequently collect the views of our constituents, and organize that information for easy access to the devs... I try to be as neutral as possible, usually, when I ask for feedback in this forum, because your feedback looks more legitimate if the original post doesn't contain any leading comments... but feel free to ask any other corr, I (andother corrs)fight hard behind the scenes.

For instance, the newbie () dev that posted in our in concept thread has been discussing those things with the correspondents directly also...

No, you don't represent the entertainer community no matter how many entertainer professions you have mastered. I have mastered all four entertainer professions as well. I am currently a master dancer and master image designer on my primarily played character. I have played this game since beta 3 and have played as a dancer since then. I would not think that this gives me the right to send a letter on behalf of the entertainer community without asking the community if they would like me to do that nor would I take credit for having "helped create" the profession as I saw you do in a long rambling post on the image designer forum.

You are NOT a correspondent. You are NOT a voice for the community, you are merely someone who like me enjoys playing this part of the game. Write as many letters as you wish to the developers but do NOT think you speak on my behalf, because you do NOT.
