Should I use personal harvesters or should I use mining installations? Is it worth the cost?

Craft as many personal extractors as you need and as soon as you have more money buy bigger harvesters. You will need them. I am currently upgrading to heavies and I still run out of minerals every once in a while.

Personally I filled up my lots with personals, and then slowly upgraded to better and better versions as I could.

I caution players not to jump into larger harvestersuntil they can comfortably cough up 10k+ per day for maintenance.

The beauty of the personal harvester is that its footprint is so small. It's great for sneaking one or two harvesters into a crowded field of mediums and heavies.. especially for the rare stuff that you'll need later on.

However, my vote is heavy harvesters, when you can afford them. As you advance in your profession, more schematics will demand resources that aren't easy to find.. so you'll need multiple harvesters to gather all the different KINDS of resources, and in large quantities. After this diversification occurs, you'll find yourself hurting for lot space. When you're out of lots and still hurting for duralloy steel, upgrading from a personal to a heavy is a beautiful thing! (andgoing from3 wind gens to a singlefusion doesn't hurt either)

As big as you can afford, you never know when some rare mineral will pop and how long it will last, it's cheaper to mine your own vs. buying it from others. It took over 2 months for Duralloy Steelto pop on our server, in a case like that you want to pull up as much as possible before the resource changes and its gone again.

How much difference is there between the medium and the heavy? I didn't see that much of an increase for the cost associated with the heavy. That heavy harvester ate me alive in power and credits everyday.

Do not buy old (7/min) heavy harvesters. New mediums will do 7 or even 8, and new heavies will do 10 or even 11.

So whatever you do do not pay >80K for a heavy harv that will be worth 5k in a week once people realize what the new mediums mean to the game.
